Marianna postet this in the FAQ Section:

Q. If I buy the Avid Xpress Pro to Media Composer software upgrade today will I get the just announced release of Media Composer software, or will I need to buy another upgrade later on?
A. The current upgrade to Avid Media Composer gives you access to the current version, v2.8 which is shipping. However, if you purchase a copy of Media Composer Software after March 17, 2008 you will be able to get the upgrade from v2.8 to  v3.0 for free via the Avid Download Center.

That is not exactly clear - do we have to pay for the update to MC 3.0 if it comes out? If I decide to upgrade my XPPro Licence to MC now will I have to pay again for the 3.0 update? If so, how much will the update cost?

It seems that the upgrade to v3.0 is free if:

1) You purchased or upgraded to v2.8 after March 17th, 2008 ... or

2) You have an active Avid Support Contract when v3.0 becomes available

 if you purchase a copy of Media Composer Software after March 17, 2008 you will be able to get the upgrade from v2.8 to  v3.0 for free via the Avid Download Center.

Isn't this clear enough, you buy your upgrade to 2.8 AFTER March 17, 2008, and V3 is FREE.

FYI today is April 18, 2008

 My interpretation of that is - 'No you will not' If you get the upgrade from AXP to MC2.8 now you won't have to pay for the upgrade to MC3.0. just the confirmation I have been looking for. Not sure what the position is if you upgraded before 17 March but then again not sure if that upgrade was available before that date, for that matter not sure when I  purchased the upgrade, will go and check.
