How can anyone in the HD "PROFESSIONAL market" find $7.5K too expensive. It represents minimal charge out days assuming of course you are charging out at a professional rate
Well the self employed doco maker right here in Australia does, most of our work is self generated not customers off the street. So we come up with a concept and shoot from there all self funded so yes $7500US is plenty for me...
And compared with other products that do more or the same yeah very expensive seeing there’s a $5000US difference between them. Let’s face it we love Avid and use it but feel where being pushed away so if it continues we will have no choice but to cut and run along with a lot others...
All this after spending lots more to do the same thing...

Hi Javier,
How do you make money? This is not meant to be an attack; I've always wondered how independent documentary makers get paid. If you could shed a little light on this, I'd appreciate it.
adios,Carl

We come up with a concept then make plenty of calls to large companies for funding that may have interests vested in that story. For example we're presently producing a coalmining history doco so we sorted funding from Rio Tinto and BHP the Unions and so on. It’s a slow and tedious task but it works we've been going on this one doco for 2 years now and still counting. Although I must add that I also work as a freelance camera operator and editor for my local news network and get paid peanuts. My wife is the producer/Director she has a degree in media and Psychology and works part time where ever she can to prop us up financially, we also do all our own post production which helps as well.
Hope this helps
Javier

It does. Thanks for sharing.

HAve you got a job for me?
Anyone know if there will be an upgrade path from Adrenaline box to NitrisDX?
I also switched to FCS so I could monitor HD at an affordable price. I can not believe Avid can not deliver this.
Since I bought my HVX 2 years ago- I have sent countless emails and phone calls-left voice mails, etc. and seldom get a straight answer. If I do get an answer it's usually: "You can view your HD material..just down-rez to SD. ugh.
I actually STILL want to come back to Avid. That's how good the system is. Just give HD output. (at $1,500)
What's so hard?
It's refreshing to hear a Moderator with an honest view, and a desire to keep things rational and debate lively without 'censoring.'
I think the key thing here is the mixed messages Avid is sending.
New Thinking. Avid is listening. MC drops to $2500: Great! They get it!
Mojo DX, $7500? I guess someone has to pay for the 'new thinking.'
This is a mixed message. On the one hand, Avid is saying "We want independent producers" but is sending them a clear message of "But you're going to pay a massive premium if you want to output or monitor."
This is utterly insane and indefensible from a user perspective. The R&D money is all in composer. The IP is in composer. The value and capabilities are in composer. It's all about freaking composer.
Why are you going to charge so little for the product that has the massive weight of the costs behind it, and then bilk your users, especially now that the economy is tightening.. I'm getting pressures to cut costs from all sides and Avid all of a sudden wants to artificially inflate a basic cost?
It's the worst of Razor-and-blades marketing, except there's a competing razor that offers rationally priced blades.
We *** because we love, or at least we want to love.
Cory.

Bokes, you hit the nail on the head. I am desperate for an HD preview and I would pay Avid 1.500.- USD for that!
I know that there are a few Avid hardcore enthusiasts (with obviously lots of money!) that think that a Mojo DX is a bargain at 7.500.- USD, but fact is that the low end Avid user (me included) can't/won't spend that much.
Let's face it, lots of us were pushed over from a very affordable AXP with reasonable upgrade prices, to MC, which will cost a lot more to upgrade. I'll bet that the upgrade from the current MC to MC 3 will cost us as much as the upgrade from AXP to the current MC (not just speculation!).
That much for a bargain upgrade offer.
Since Avid Xpress Pro HD I have been waiting for a proper HD preview solution (again for the low end user) and two years later I am owning an MC without this VERY IMPORTANT FEATURE!
I am very dissappointed, to say the least!
I am certain that Avid has gained on popularity and market share by offering the upgrade from AXP to MC, but by not offering us a lower end solution and offering hoplessly overpriced hardware (I actually mean the Mojo DX) there is the risk that we need to use other applications to do so.
That will only make Avids competitors stronger!
Pretty please with sugar on top ... think about us low end users.
One possible sollution. Total "rule breaking" speculation on my part, but...
Given that full screen preview at 1080p is possible using the nVidia Quadra 3700 card and you can drop two of these cards into a PCIe system and two cards costs <$2000. Would this give us a 1080p DVI output to our HD monitor while still keeping our dual-monitor desktop?
Charles
Nice idea Charles (really mean it), but wont give you a proper HD signal needed for preview and colour correction. I have talked to an European Avid reseller and they have tried to hook up a brand new JVC HD broadcast monitor with said solution (also DVI splitter and analogue converters) with dissappointing results.
Great to know that at least european resellers have noticed that there is a need for a low cost solution and that they are working on a solution for their customers!

.- Thanks.
But no.
Read the threads, this scheme has been discussed to the exaustion.
Is not a solution.

Yes- I see there is an upgrade if you bought the Adrenaline after Jan 1 2008.
Well, I was on the Adrenaline bandwagon since day one- ver 1. This was back when I was using a meridian and my Avid rep sold me on the new "future" proof Adrenaline.
Turned out my brand new firewire Adrenaline was full of playback problems for many, many months. Other Avid editors laughed at me for making the switch. OK- I jumped in too early...Adrenaline is more stable now- but I suffered. How about a little payback?
Don't us early adaptors deserve the same discount? If not, I have no choice- I'm sadly sticking FCS.
