You are so right!!!! I don’t understand why people think it costs Avid so much money to build something.

.- That's because they don't have the Macpro, the Iphone, the Imac, the Itunes store and the Ipod to amortize the costs.

Apple could give FCS for free without great financial damage.

Avid only have their edting stuff.

Avid is a tiny company (compared to Apple) making high end,  top of the line video solutions.

    BUT

On the other side you could say that

    Aja, Blackmagic, Matrox, etc

They don't have Iphones, Ipos and Imacs either!

    (EDIT)

    But

    On the other other side:

1.- Avid hardware/software integration is far superior.

    2.- Avid hardware IS superior.

Can you name one third party hardware with the power of a Nitris?

3.- Avid customer service is excellent, and I know this because I've used it.

I had a damaged Xpress Meridian dongle some time ago and, in less than 20 hours my Xpress was back on again.

Try that with Apple or Blackmagic!!

    4.- FCP sucks donkey.

In the long run, you save more money using Avid.

    But Again.

My concern is not Avid prices precisely.

I'm looking for solutions, not for bargains.

Forgive me for what may be a rather uneducated question, but what is stopping you from simply running a DVI to HDMI cable out to an HD client LCD on a 3rd monitor, and running full screen playback on that unit?

That is essentially what all the Windows Media Center and Apple TV machines are doing, is it not?  It seems to me a second graphics card could do what is being expected of a breakout box.  Of course, I'm sure there is some basic fact I'm overlooking here...

Actually I'm thinking the exact samething too.... It's just that they want componet out instead of HDMI.... so then you'd need 2 adapters.... DVI to HDMI, HDMI to Componet.

But how much would an additional Graphics Card cost + DVI to HDMI and HDMI to Compnet... I'm figuring that's somewhere up in to 2-3k range.... maybe?, depends on the graphics card. But I've also heard the Full Screen out isn't full rez.

.- The "full" screen res you get from a video card is, actually,  LOW res, not suitable for broadcast accurate monitoring or Color Correction.

What you get is an inferior RGB video overlay.

It doesn't accelerate effects nor is realtime.

I doubt it would be compatible with DNxHD resolutions.

    There is no genlock.

    There is no delivery options.

And, last but don't least, it doesn't work well without third party plugins..

For the macfly scheme to work (just to work) , you need a special plugin like the Cyberzeka.

And there is no Cyberzeka plugin for Avid.

The "Macfly" scheme (that's the name of that configuration) has been discussed in this forum ad nauseam.

It is not a solution for professional work, not only in Avid, in no other App.

If a video card worked fine, we wouldn't be asking for this kind of solution.

    That's why the MXO exists.

What about having Mojo SDI pass DNxHD via the SDI port. They can do it on the AirSpeed via the DNxchange..... maybe they could make a smaller DNxchange type device that goes into Mojo SDI's out port then you take componet out from that? You just lose your output port, but the DNxchange type box would have the needed ports on it. SMPTE 259M should be able to handle any DNxHD format without a problem.

The talk of cost is crap when you consider that it cost auto companies $2000 per auto...

The mojo wouldn't cost more than $150.

Well as much as I am underwhelmed by Avids new pricing I don't think this argument really holds water. To say that a piece of hardware should cost X based on the cost of manufacture is to simple of an equation. You need to also figure in the cost of development as well as other costs of doing business ie. payroll, insurance, real estate payments or lasses etc... These are all costs that need to be spread across the profit margin of each unit sold.

I really think they need to take Mojo DX and change it to Adrenaline DX and add a few ports (even if that means making it a little bigger) and keep the current Mojo DX price:

  • SD and HD SDI Input (combined connector)
  • SD and HD SDI Output (combined connector)
  • HDMI output
  • Componet Out
  • Reference Sync Black&Burst and HD TriLevel input (combined connector)
  • 8 channels SD-SDI embedded digital audio I/O
  • 8 channels HD-SDI embedded digital audio input
  • 16 channels HD-SDI embedded digital audio output
  • 2 channels optical S/PDIF digital audio I/O
  • 8 channels optical ADAT digital audio I/O
  • 2 channels XLR analog audio output
  • 2 channels 1/4" TRS analog audio I/O
  • Headphone stereo 3.5mm TRS output
  • Wordclock output
  • LTC In (BNC or XLR)
  • LTC Out (BNC or XLR)
  • Some internal DNxHD processing
  •

and then something like, the following for Mojo DX (under $4000-$4500):

    • SD and HD SDI I/O (combined connector)
    • HDMI output
    • Componet Out
    • 8 channels HD/SD SDI embedded digital audio input
    • 8 channels HD/SD SDI embedded digital audio output
    • 8 channels optical ADAT digital audio I/O
    • 2 channels 1/4" TRS analog audio Input
    • 2 channels 1/4" TRS analog audio Output
    • Headphone stereo 3.5mm TRS output
    • Wordclock output

Cause I'm starting to realize that the current Mojo DX isn't really worth it for almost anybody unless it has true timecode in/outs and componet outs.

Maybe we should all email Avid requesting something like this actually be done?

I'd buy one with these specs at the price you mentioned! Fact is that the lower end Avid users are in desperate need for a proper HD solution.

you are exactly right Mike.  everyone wants to ignore the thousands upon thousands (if not more) spent in R&D.  we consumers are our own worst enemies...we demand prices be so low that we force things like tech support overseas, and then guess what?  we gripe about that too. a software company releases an upgrade and everyone complains about the price.  They don't release an upgrade and everyone says it is outdated.  this cycle is killing me! =)

Need I remind you guys that I was the one who broke the price down, and IN THE SAME POST I SAID that you're not paying for hardware, you're paying for R&D?  The point is, R&D is a fixed cost, then they just have to set the price at which that unit will be most profitable.  (# of sales * net) Plus, you have to consider future popularity of the product.

My point is that they really screwed the pooch on that last part.  If they lowered the price by 2/3, they'd sell 5x as many, and make more gross.  Further, they'd have a fighting chance at market share if they didn't overcharge so dramatically for the hardware.  (Trust me, there is nothing remotely groundbreaking in a Mojo DX.)  They're just afraid to let that 'price protection' genie out of the bottle-- as they stick their fingers in their ears and pretend that genie's not already  out, when people buy FCP or a matrox system that does more for a lot less....

I've been following these conversations the last week here and on the L-2 and I think the one thing that holds true is "Perception is everything"

Avid's "misstep" with the pricing of MojoDX is not really with the pricing... it's with the naming.

Think about it, as of Monday's announcement it is now possible to have a "Nitris(DX)" for $15K, Nitris brand hardware has a certain level of expectancy in the professional world and costs more than most people's cars.  Offering a "DX" version of Nitris for a fraction of the cost was a great move.

From a customer psychology/perception standpoint, Avid should've considered naming the new MojoDX as "AdrenalineDX" - and at a cost of $10K, most would jump at the chance to own a "discounted" Adrenaline, despite it's limited I/O

The "Mojo" brand has a reputation of being the low-end/cost-effective solution, and that to me is the real issue here with regard to the cost/feature with the new MojoDX.

    Swing and a miss....
