Can you speak a bit further on how the matrox box can make my plasma client monitor

more of a color-critical "god monitor" vs. what either the mojodx or nitris ds can do as

    a monitoring output?

    Thanks

no this is just speculation because the MXO2 has just been released and material about it is hard to find but what I am guessing is that there will be software on your computer that you can use with the MXO2 that will adjust the MXO2's HDMI signal output so you can have more advanced adjustments to the output signal than just the limited ones on a non-professional/consumer based plasma or lcd hdtv.  obviously if your client monitor is a professional production monitor, then this option wouldnt apply or be need for your production monitor.  i think this feature is targeted towards consumer HDTVs for a cheaper client monitor and not pro monitors

I’m about to purchase the secondary system. According, to Kevin Klimek in regards to the new pricing, I will wait and see if the price gets near competitors, If not I may be forced to buy Mac Pro and FCS to accommodate Matrox

Don’t get me wrong, I love Avid and I have been using it for years. Some business decisions may make sense for them self, but not to the customers.

We all have to make our own decisions, what kind of investment would be the right choice, to save money with the current economy turmoil and to generate revenue at the acceptable level.

Curious - if you do go the route of buing the MacPro, FCS and the Matrox setup, how much is that going to total?  Isn't going to be close to just getting the Mojo DX?  You lose the ability to do DNxHD capture which saves a bit of disk space.

    jasperfdo,

Absolutely, even if I get the MojoDX, still have to upgrade the workstation to meet the system requirement (Looking at about the $ 2500.00 for upgrade).

With Apple rout, I will have more options available, for example, Avid compatibility issue with JVC GY-HD110U while FCS handled that camera with no issue that I’m aware of. I’m about to buying the Sony EX1; I heard there is no major issue with FCS.

I have 2 MC licenses. I have to keep one and let the other go to open up room for FCS.

I wouldn't say FCS had no major issues with the JVC cameras. Their support *was* late (nowhere near as late as Avid, but still over a year after it should have been supported), and people still struggle to capture their footage without losing massive chunks thanks to FCS's inability to handle shot changes very well.

.- I don't know what kind of of drug Apple has released to dumb down people and make them believe in the stupid idea that FCS is the remedy for all their problems, the perfect application that never fails and is compatible with everything.

The reality is that FCS has issues with EVERYTHING.

Nothing I've done on FCP works easily,  smooth and flawlessly, there is always a struggle, a big issue or a complicated workaround.

I have seen on many different occasions compatibility issues in the past, here in this forum with MC and some models of cameras. And they were all referred to FCS for the support on particular device.

As I said earlier, I love Avid, don’t get me wrong, and there is no point arguing. No drugs from Apple either.

The main reason of switching one of my MC licenses is.

The price of the new mojo DX way to high for me, as well as no price drop on mojo sdi to upgrade my current first generation of  mojo.

I do hold the license for premiere pro cs3 as well as Sony Vegas 8 for the backup as well. This is the reason why I’m looking to dump one of my MC licenses to accommodate Matrox   for better support on FCS as well as premiere pro cs3.

Raspago, very very well said. I too have had the same type of experiences and am constantly wondering why people are lining up to buy FCP. That said, Avid has issues too but from where I stand things always go smoother with Avid. Plus for me it's a better editor interface, hands down. Apple just has a way of getting people to love their stuff, even if it's flawed, Avid has no such luck.

I'm no Apple/FCP fan.  Just ask any of the poor unfortunates that have to deal with my vitriol on the 'cow.  Or read my last 'grass isn't greener' post.  However,  The DX pricing is an abomination.  Best case scenario, it might help with Dnxhd encoding/decoding.  Other than that, it's a supremely limited I/O.  The fact that it doesn't even do component SD is just plain stupid. What about component HD?  I'm using a component distribution system because it supports both SD and HD.  And where I live, the stations only take spots on Beta SP.  So I'm SOL.  If SD is "no longer necessary" then why is it available on the higher end nitris DX?  They're actually eliminating SD support on the low end to give you basic HD?

I have an FCP setup and a HP MC/Mojo setup. I also play with MC Soft on my Mac. Dnxhd and prores422 are *very* similiar.  You don't need special hardware to encode prores, and on my quad-core Mac Pro, CPU usage is almost identical to DNXHD.  DNXHD is *already* more efficient than prores when multiple streams are running. (2 years earlier.  WTG, Avid.)

If the Avid engineers did truly multithread the core app (I've been begging for 3+ years to any who would listen, so thanks for finally listening) then my Quad core has plenty of power to do the mentioned 6 streams of Dnxhd on the cores alone (An hd stream of DnxHD takes 35% of one core-- I should theoretically be able to do 10ish in RT, assuming the drives were there...)

You could make a case for "older" computers, but why buy a $7500 piece of hardware instead of a $3500 computer?  Dumb.

I assume the main thing the Mojo DX does is format/timebase conversion-- which as several have mentioned is EXACTLY what the kona LHE does.  For the past 2 years.  For $1500.  With all the SD, SDI, HD-SDI, Analog, Digital, genlock, upres/downres you could want.

    Bad mojo, Avid.  Bad mojo.

In my uninformed opinion, I think pricing was the holdup on the "feb 2008" announcements.  I bet they had priced it lower, and the new CEO pushed it back up.  The tiers don't seem priced "right" at all.

I could forgive them a $5000 mojo if it did everything an Adrenaline did. (plus pcie interface)  But they are clearly trying to not-tick off the Adrenaline purchasers, or price protect the symphony.  Silly, guys.  And I'm still stuck on FCP....

Why are you laying waste to any possibility of growing your installed base this late in the game?  Or worse, pushing them to Liquid, which isn't really an "avid" product anyway?  The ONLY people who are going to buy MC/ Mojo DX are existing Avid customers...  I guess you're hoping the $295 student MC soft saves your bacon, but the $7500 Mojo DX price is wholy inconsistent with the $295 student/$2495 MC Soft decision.  Think of the future, guys.  You can be 2x as much as the competition, but you can't be 5X the cost, with hobbled I/O.  You just can't.

    Avid's insane new pricing:

    Q. I currently have a Media Composer with Avid Mojo and would like to upgrade my hardware. What is required?
    A. Avid offers a $7,500 upgrade US MSRP to Mojo DX for Media Composer software users.  The upgrade is available to Mojo users and does not require the return of the original Mojo. Upgrading customers should not use the Mojo and Mojo DX on the same system due to driver compatibility issues.  Please note that to be eligible for hardware upgrade prices, an active service contract is required, including a reinstatement fee if applicable.

$7500 + an active service contract?  No firstborn?  Yipes.

There is no rational explanation other than the idea that Avid is specifically abandoning percieved "low end" users on the MC hardware chain.  This is specifically for enterprise installations, and we know this by the "service contract" requirement.  Most of us don't go for that, as we come here to figure out our problems (most of the time doing the debug/workarounds ourselves), not Avid support.

They clearly want to drive the non-enterprise to liquid or FCP.  They would obviously much rather have fewer, much more profitable suckers, uh, I mean users, than more.  Shortsighted as hell, but what am I gonna do?  New thinking, indeed.

hmmmm this is really bad if you upgraded from xpress pro without a service contract. Beside the fact that $7.500 is the nominal price of a mojo dx without the software, given that mojo dx + MC software 3.0 will set you back $10.000 and MC soft at present costs $2.500. Why on earth not just sell the Mojo DX to whoever wants it at that price? Why the need for a 'service contract'?

Sounds like version 3.0 will not be sold at the same pricepoint as the current available version.

.- The real problem is not the price of the Mojo DX.

Actually,  there is no low end offerings with this "new thinking".

The DX is the replacement of the Adrenaline, the Nitis DX is the replacement for the Nitris.

There is no replacement for the Mojo.

I have 2 bust mojos ( out of warranty ) which leaves me in a bit of a predicament as the boss wants the cheapest option as a replacement. What do I buy ? Something that loses it's value straight away and no one will want to use after a few months ?

I might just not replace them and limp on until everything becomes clearer.
