I have a dvd with opens and transitions created out of house.
I got the transitions with alpha to import and play on the timeline, but they don't play in the source
monitor, I can only see a frame I'm parked on. Is this normal with Quicktime imports?
This second problem concerns me more...
The longer opens, that have no alphas, import as full screen white. The Audio attached to these
can be heard and sound fine. Any suggestions are appreciated!
Not sure about the first problem, but usually a white screen with a quicktime is a missing codec...Check in the quicktime player what codec the QT was made in.

If the out-of-house company created that media on FCP using ProRes codecs, good luck. You'll need to get them to resupply using a compatible codec. Avid's codecs LE package will allow them to export as DNxHD, which would be good for you.
Regarding the first issue, try your import again, but this time if you used "existing" as the alpha option, try "invert" (or vice versa).

In Quicktime, you should be able to get the movie's properties and see what codec was used.
