    Re: Stereoscopic 3D...do we care?

That was a very relevant article.  Nice find!

From the reports that I read about the LA show, the pricing is NOT comparable with Decklink and Aja products.  Until Avid offers identical capabilities and competitive prices to the 3rd party vendors' products (decklink and Aja primarily), I will remain convinced that the new management "does not get it."

I hope they prove me wrong.

If creating hype around a "cool Box", flashy ipod, and pretty phone can grab you unwarranted market share then Avid marketing latching on to flashy 3D must be the ultimate tribute to Apple marketing.

For me at the least they could choose sync script or something similarly innovative that makes life "cooler" for most users.

Thanks for the continued dongle support

I have to agree with most of what has been said thus far. I truly would like for Avid to focus on stability, software integration and functionality. Please Avid address the lack of secondary color correction in Media Composer. Thanks!

Well said.  I hope Gary Greenfield reads the forum every now and then to actually "read" what the users are saying.  I've heard he and the management team is making some good pushes on getting things right before release and bug fixes.  Hopefully, his guidance at the helm will continue to move this ship ahead and not be distracted.

How about get HD waves settled before 3D even comes up on the radar screen.

    Re: Stereoscopic 3D...do we care?

I have to agree with the rest of you that I could care less about 3-D. It's the big buzz in the high end film circles, but I truly believe this attempt at keeping people coming to theaters instead of watching at home on Blu-Ray is just like the 50s.

Cameron likes to tout how great the new technology is and how it isn't hard on the eyes anymore. (He owns PACE systems, a 3-D camera manufacturer, so he is biased) However, I have talked to a few people who have seen the new Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3-D and they had motion sickness and headaches when they left the theater.

Since the motion picture business is one of Avid's last strongholds, I completely understand them trying to do anything they can to save that market.

As for this being a reflection of the new regime, the technology shown at the event has to have been in the development stage for at least a year by now. That rules out the current management from having any input on it's development priority up to now.

Discussions like these are invaluable to them as they try to get a handle on their marketplace.

Interestingly enough, I opened the paper today and there was a big AP article about 3D movies and how Pixar says they'll release all future movies in 3D.  Perhaps it is an emerging market?

    Re: Stereoscopic 3D...do we care?

I don't think that anyone is denying that this is going to be a great feature soon but, I guess my point is that there are so many deficiencies in the editor right now like the arcane effects handling, the clunky Red workflow, the need for an updated UI, that I guess I was looking for a little more hype in those areas and save 3D for June or even August.

Maybe the bedrock features that are missing now will be rolled out during the year. I just question the "Hey look we've got 3D editing" hype when, as Kevin says, most of our cars have a flat tire and they're offering us really cool headlights.

The offline part is in MC, the online conform was being shown in DS. It's basically a form of grouping to get the stereo pairs together. What I couldn't find out is if that precludes you actually using grouping with those cameras. This would create a two layer deep group which is scary to me as we have media management issues with regular groups.

I'm not necessarily saying that 3D should be a priority, and I agree that other features probably need more and sooner attention.  However, we just finished a 3D film on DS, and the new 3D technology will be welcomed.  There's more of this business out there.

I have only read a couple articles on stereoscopic, and do not know the current workflow, but it seems like it is an important feature for the 'future'. I do agree that there might be more important changes that should happen first, and other things that should be fixed first, but it could be that Team Stereo finished their stuff before Team UI, and Team Bugs, lol.  (Side Note: my school recently bought a nice steroscopic projector)

    Re: Stereoscopic 3D...do we care?

3D is an attempt to do what Avid does, go after the high end customer.  It's something that is interesting and relative to what a lot of the big studios are doing right now.  It's not a feature that is going to mean anything to 95% of the user base but it will mean something to customers with the biggest bank accounts and that is who Avid always thinks about first.

    Re: Stereoscopic 3D...do we care?

This says more about Avid's "New Thinking" than all their marketing hype. They will continue to serve the large corporate needs and throw a few crumbs to the rest of us. I can't even edit different frame rates in the same timeline, what the crap do I care about 3D.
