Hi folks. Symphony newbie here. I'm a current DS Editor and trying to learn Symphony. I'm at a loss as to how to access effect properties that are "stacked" into a clip. The clip has a Motion Effect placed onto it. Then a Color Correction and then dissolves at both ends. Can I go directly to the Motion Effect properties without first deleting the effects that came after it? Hope I explained it okay.
Thanks,
Bob K.
Use the up and down arrow keys on the left hand side of the timeline tool to "step in" and "step out" of nested effects. As you access each layer, you will be able to change parameters of different effects, one nested layer at a time. Alternately, you can double click on an effect in the timeline to see the stack without stepping into it.

Our of interest Keulerb what made you switch to Symphony ?
If this job was easy it wouldn't be any fun.
Hi Larry,
Maybe it's the way the effects are applied? I have a clip with Color Correction that shows as green dots along the bottom of the clip. A motion effect with the icon in the middle of the clip and dissolves at either end. I double-clicked on the motion effect icon and on the green dots of the color correction. I've tried the step-in and step-out arrows. Nothing works.
To access the motion effect properties I need to use the remove effect button to take off the color correction. I then select the effect palette or effect editor button and the property page for the motion effect appears. I then perform an undo which brings back the color correction.
ONe thought as I'm typing this, Do I need to be in Segment Mode (Red Arrow selected) with the clip highlighted to access the effect nest?
I'm using Symphony Nitris 1.7 on an HP 9300 Dual Boot DS system.
Thanks again.
BK
I'm on Media Composer, but these tools are essentially the same between MC and SN. When you are parked on the color correction icon in the clip and in the effects mode, you SHOULD be able to step in to the color correction effect to reveal the motion effect clip underneath. Be advised, that with motion effect clips, you cannot step into them and nest an effect underneath...so the color correction effect must reside on top of the motion clip. You do not need to be in segment editing mode to do this. If you can't step into the color correction clip, I would recommend rebuilding site settings files and see if the problem persists. You should not have to remove the color correction effect to access the motion effect clip underneath.
Hi Blue Crow.
The reason for the switch was because there are 3 shows that were on-lined and the Producer and VP of National Productions wanted me to take a look at the shows. I am the Senior (and only) Union staff DS Editor for WLIW (PBS Channel 21) in New York. Since I had the time, they wanted me to take a look at the programs. It turns out that the motion effects, color corrections and audio mixes needed a "little" tweaking. So, I'm learning by doing and I do have a couple of folks here who know XPress Pro for a little guidence. This is the end of my 3rd week working in Symphony.
So I actually haven't switched and DS is still my "Bread and Butter."
Hope that helps.
That's the thing, I don't have a Color Correction icon. All I see are the green dots and the Motion Effect icon in the middle of the clip. I do believe the Color Correction was applied last because when I select "Remove Effect" the Color Correction goes first.
How do I rebuild my "Site Settings Files" and what are they?
Hi Bob, nice to see you over here as well. I'm not in front of a Symphony at the moment so I can't advise on the motion effect, however, to tweak the Color Correction effect you need to access the CC mode. At the bottom of your timeline, you should see a bunch of icons, some similar to DS. Step in and out arrows, Source / Record, Effects and the last one is Color Correction. Click on this and you will have access to your CC parameters. Since you have a dotted green line, you are either in tape, master clip or subclip mode. You may want to change the effect to segment mode to just affect the one clip.
One of the reasons I use Symphony is familiarity. Not so much for myself, but for the Editors and Assists on feature previews. Some of the features I've been working on have had Assistants doing a lot of the work the Online Artist used to do. Plus the Editor can jump on the system and noodle around himself. I try to recommend running a dual-boot, so you have the best of both worlds.

BK: If you don't see a color correction icon on the motion effect clip, either the CC effect has not been applied (by ALT + drag to the motion clip) or the toolset is behaving erratically, which a site settings rebuild will usually cure. Quit the application and in the settings folder trash the following files: MC State, Site_Settings, Site_Attributes. On re-launch the system will detect the missing files and build new ones. First, it's a good idea to back up any customized bin and timeline views and export profiles you have created...on some systems these will need to be restored.
I think you are finding a documented 'feature' in SN (you are not the first!).

That's the answer I'm looking for! However, there are two things:
1. I need to hit the "Promote" button to make changes to the Motion Effect.
2. Here's the BIG one! The guys who did the original on-line used a Relationship Color Correction (Src Segment) instead of CC Effect! This is why I got green dots and not a Color Correction icon! This is also why I wan't able to "Step Into" the effects nest.
So I want to thank you all for your responses! It really has been a pleasure and it is kind of exciting to me to finally be learning this software. I know I have a long way to go but I also know I have a new valuable resource available to me.
Thanks again!

You get the green dot by default, rather than the colour correction lines, if you don't have 'show colour correction' enabled in your timeline view (hamburger menu bottom left of timeline - where show clip colours/audio waveforms etc are).
Src segment is not a 'relationship' colour correction - but it is the normal way of applying a colour correction in the SN.
Colour effect is basic and pretty nasty but available across the MC/AXP range.
By 'relationship colour correction' I would assume you mean apply colour correction globally by reel or clip name (selected within the colour corrector) - the more powerful side of the SN colour corrector.
