I'll be doing a project on MC 2.7 Adrenaline (no Dnexcel)
The camera choice may now be a Sony to HDcam tape.
Budget for post allows for very little online/conform, so the idea originally was to
edit in MC w/DVCproHD codec from P2 backups...once approved.. spit out images sequences
for color correction at which point that facility (having HDcam) could lay to master tape
for delivery.
Now with HDcam aquisition, I may request DVCproHD dubs so I can rent a deck and bring in via
firewire and maintain the above described workflow.
What issues (quality and otherwise) can I expect from dubbing HDcam to DVCproHD?
Thank you very much if you can help.
That really depends on the frame rate etc.
I hate television. I hate it as much as I hate peanuts. But I can't stop eating peanuts.
Orson Welles (1915 - 1985)
Camera would capture 108024p.
So I guess dubs would go to dvcPro HD at 24p.
It really depends on side by side comparisons or split screen to compare the image on the player and recorder to see who's happy/notices the compression. I believe it is noticable without comparing side by side but some of my colleagues argue with me on that.
We had some material in recently mixed between DVCPRO tape and P2 with a few reels on HDCAM. I felt the HDCAM stood out and that the P2 footage lacked a bit of colour and contrast as did the DVCPRO but an element of that could be down to the camera man.
We graded the pictures on a Pogle Platinum though so all colour and contrast issues were delt with there but even with the DVNR on the pictures did have an element of that hazy shadowy compression artefact type look on some of the skyline shots.
Where is it being shot ?
Thanks for the reply.
Shoot will be city exteriors. Doc interviews, etc.
I assumed that dubs would be made HDcam Deck HD-SDI out to
Panasonic Deck HD-SDI in.
DP is strongly advocating Teranex for transcode to DVCPro HD.
I'm thinking of getting DNxcel for this and renting HDcam deck for ingest,
But will Avid's HD codec be significantly better than the HDcam to
DVCPro HD dubbing workflow?
Thanks again.
Well I'm very luck I have a HDCAM SR and a Symphony Nitris so I do have a bias to the HDCAM route.
One thing I would suggest is going to a hire company or reseller and get them to do a demo of the workflow ideas and compare the footage. The smaller ( cheaper ) companies might not be able to do this as they might not have all the kit under one roof but it's really worth you running the tests in advance.
When you dangle the potential hire in front of them along with the chance of repeat business you'll find some companies will give you alot of their time and resourses to help you get what you want.
