Upgrading driver version on nvidia quadra FX 2500M

     Hi,

This is my first post on the MC forum having just taken advantage oof the upgrade from AXP.

I have installed the software on a Dell M90 laptop with the above video card which is currently running on version 84.29. I amm trying to upfrade it to 91.85 as recommended in the Read Me. My problem is when I unzip the WinXp_2K(91.85) file it opens up as 293 files none of which are called WinXp_2K(91.85)exe so I double click on what would seem to be the lgical choice - Setup.exe.

This the opens the installer which stops with the following message:-

'The nvidia set up program could not locate any drivers that are compatable with your current hardware. Set up will now exit.'

First impressions are that MC seems to be working fine on the older driver but I would like to be running on the recommended one. Does any one have any idea as to what I am doing wrong and how I can install the correct driver.

    Thanks

    Graham

Many laptops, including those from Dell, need drivers from their manufacturer - aka Dell. This is because the graphics chipset is a slightly modified thus not being able to be ID'd correctly by the driver package.

short answer is - go to Dell's support site and download the latest drivers from them :)

     Thanks Dom,

I have been to Dell support and have located a Download, they refer to the file as GR120810.exe,which is different from the Avid one. I guess I will only know if this is ver 91.85 after I have completed the download, if it is not and it affects the running of MC I assume I can always roll back to the previoius version, is that right?

    Thanks again.

Yes you can go back (assuming you have the right installer to put it back in).

Just looked at the nvidia site and it suggests downloading Powerdraft ver 15.0904 which does not seem to be right. Is there anywhere on their site where you can download specific driver version? I've looked but can't find anywhere.

Like I said before you need to download it from DELL's website. No other driver package will work without going through some hacking.

Go to Dell's site. Go to support. Punch in your Service Tag#. Download the drivers. I am unsure why you are even looking at Powerdraft and such.

Re: Upgrading driver version on nvidia quadra FX 2500M

    Hi,

Been to the Dell site and proceeded as you suggest, none of the Video driver updates refer to my Nvidia card. I think this is a job for Monday as I don't seem to be able to speek to anyone there. Also looked at the Nvidia site they don't seem to be up to date with the drivers versions for Avid anyway, the ones for liquid, AXP and MC are all older versions.

Thanks for you advice Dom, I think this may be the start of drawn out discussions with Dell.

Dell will always have the drivers for any of their hardware. You just need to use your Service Tag to find it quickly. I can get the drivers to my 2 year old Dell laptop in 10 seconds if I use the Service Tag.

The standard NVidia driver package will only support standard NVidia video card (aka it has not been modified).

Re: Upgrading driver version on nvidia quadra FX 2500M

     Dom,

I have done as you suggested, enetered the service tga and it identifies that I have a Dell Precision M90, it also shows 3 downloads available under 'Video' of which only 1 applies to the FX2500M card. Its file name at Dell is 'nVidia_multi-device_A06_R172810.exe'

Once this has been downloaded it turns out to be the version 84.29 that came with it when it arrived. It therefore appears that version 91.85 is not available from the Dell site. i assume that maybe dell have not girot round to putting the newer version on their site yet?

    Would this seem correct?

You are correct. Dell is often not up to date with their drivers. 84.29 is a qualified version. Try it. See if it works. If you absolutely need to use a more up to date, you may need to contact Dell and find out if they have it. If not, I will try to look for the instructions in how to get the standard NVidia driver package to install on your system.

Re: Upgrading driver version on nvidia quadra FX 2500M

     Dom,

Thanks for your assistance, it is greatly appreciated. I think I will just keep checking the Dell site to see if they put the ver 91.85 on there. I have MC working on my laptop with ver 84.29 and I have no problems.

I think I am being a bit over zealous - new laptop just out of the box, it had an old version of Quicktime on it so I updated that and noticed it did not have the recommeneded Nvidia driver on it so wanted to sort that as well.

At the end of the day it is all working and up to date on my workstation which is may main concern. the laptop was not really bought for editing but it will be useful I am sure to have it on there.

    Thanks again
