Octo-Mac / 10.4.11 / QT 7.3 / MC 2.8 / Mojo SDI Imported some 720p/23.98 (over 59.94) P2 footage from HVX-200. Footage is under/overcranked (Variable Frame Rates) Imported fantastically into a 720p/23.98 project, properly recognized in the bin as 720p/59.94 with a 23.98 frame rate. Go to output via Firewire to our AJ-HD1400 - disable Mojo SDI using "DNA" button on Timeline. Connect 1400 via Firewire. Change Deck Configuration to Firewire on OHCI and it auto-configures the 1400/60. Close/Relaunch application. Open Digital Cut tool - only options are for Crash Record, when I know this deck supports Insert / Assemble (since I do it all the time in FCP...) And even if I set it to Crash Record, I get a massive Flamethrower error that ends with 'Failed to Initialize Stream' Does anyone have a secret recipe to allow MC Soft to output (even assemble edit) to a HD1400 deck?
I know that the deck only records 59.94, but FCP will take a 23.98 sequence and add in the 2:3 / flagged frames to output to tape. It seems the Avid can / will not do this?
If I try to drop these clips into a 720p/59.94 project I get the:
"Clip Frame Rate (23976) does not match Project Frame Rate (59940)" Error.
Now I'm not on Adrenaline, so I don't have the option of transcoding to DNxHD and outputting via HD-SDI, and, frankly, I shouldn't need to.
Has anyone ever sucessfully output variable frame rate footage from a HVX-200 out to tape via Firewire?
I do it all the time in FCP, and I really don't want to have to do this job in FCP, but if Avid won't do the job, then I'm going to have to.

I have found FW output in 23.976 projects to be very flaky at best.
We have an AJ-HD1200a, which only supports crash recording. Once you enable Video Output to 1394 and have the deck attached, you will almost always get a Flamethrower error the first time you try and play a sequence. If you hit play again immediately, it should play.
Likewise, we've found digcuts to be equally unreliable. I sometimes have to try ten times in order to get it to work, but eventually, it does.
BTW, 59.94 over FW has worked well.

an equally unsatisfactory alternative is to record the off-speed footage to DV in-camera. Yep, this little camera is WAY ahead of Avid's capacity to ingest and output.

Thank you both for your help.
I, too, have had great success with 59.94 based output over FW.
Had I known there was off-speed stuff before starting, I probably would have played it directly out of the camera via FW into our 1400 and then just digitized in via the SD-SDI.
Ah well, client approved the rough cut today so it all works out in the end.
Thanks again,
-Scott
