    Re: P2 Workflow

Just finished 20-min project (4 video layers) using only P2 video and .png graphics, etc. ONLY problem in final post was a reported 'missing media' error after I inserted a final fade effect at the conclusion of the piece.  If I played the project somewhere in the middle, no problems.  When I got closer to the final fade, the missing media error dialog would be invoked. I had a suspicion, so I replaced the fade and we were ready to rock.  Curiously, the reported missing media clip (P2) was alive and well in both the bin and the timeline (and was located nowhere near the fade).

That's the only funkiness I've seen so far, but I'm not monkeying around w/AUX timecode or anything.

allow me to quote my own self from elsewhere on the boards:

"you're writing about a fundamental underpinning of how Avid works with media.  Avid's got at least one foot firmly planted in tape-based media, where careful attention to source tapes and timecode were essential components of Avid's success at tape-based media management."

AMA is a very hopeful solid step in the right direction. Avid just needs to keep on steppin'.

I think BillS's point is that there is no such thing as an Intel G5.  All G5 model computers had PowerPC processors.  The Intel processor equipped Macintosh is called MacPro.

I'm sure Kevin's point is that I'm not very careful what I put on my system specs. The corrected version is now on display (for a short time)  going to Nehalem soon

    P2 Question

I have a project that I am being brought in to finish that has P2 footage in it.  I am told that the project is all at 10:1m at the moment which means the original AE must have transcoded the footage from whatever it was shot at?  So in a perfect world this would be as easy as the relink ->  Highest Quality and it would relink to the original full resolution media correct?  I'm just worried that the original AE will have trashed the higher res media in which case I wouldn't be sure where to start.  Any suggestions is this is the case??

    Re: P2 Question

Well, if the original editor trashed the master footage files, and you don't have backups... then... that's that.  You're job just got easier cuzz you have nothing to do but explain.

If you do have the original p2 MXF files stored somewhere, you should be able to copy them all to the Avid Mediafiles folder and relink to higher res.

I highly doubt the originals were deleted, especially without a backup.  That's like taking original film negative and setting it on fire... now why would you do that?

    Re: P2 Question

OK they found the original mxf from the p2 so that crisis is averted.  This project needs to be finished at dv 25 and the media is currently at 10:1m and was shot at 720p so the original mxf files are at 720p.

So when I end up doing the "online" for this at dv25 all I will have to do is get the original clips and transcode them to dv 25.  Then when I decompose the low res sequence I can tell the new clips to relink to the dv 25 media and it should be as easy as that correct?  Let me know if I'm incorrect.  Sorry to sound like a complete newbie but this will be the first time for me doing this process and I appreciate all the input I have found on the forums!

    Re: P2 Question

What frame rate was it shot at?  Although, if the previous editor was able to transcode to 10:1, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to go to dv25.

I would personally try to connect all the media to the HD material first, then worry about transcoding it down to dv25.

    Re: P2 Question

So today I went in just to see what I was in for and ran into some snags.  The system has seperate media drives setup for the transcoded p2 clips and the Full Resolution P2 which appears to only have been shot at DV50 (When I run the media tool the clips pop up as DV50).  Now in my 30i project when I go to a P2 file that has been transcoded (10:1m) and try to relink the clips with the full resolution dv50 clips on the other drive the avid tells me that there are no clips to relink.  Not quite sure what is going on here, I tried using all drives and then tried targeting only dv50 as a resolution (dv50 because this is what the clips show up as in the media tool).  Am I missing something stupid here??

    Re: P2 Question

Another post since the edit function doesn't work.  When I select the clips in the transcoded bin I only have the option to relink offline master clips to to online media files.  Would it be better if I attempted to try and relink the whole sequence with the highest quality setting as opposed to testing this on clips?

    Re: P2 Question

Ok another update.  I've been able to get some of the clips to relink and not others.  After doing some snooping I realized that the old AE assigned tape names to the transcoded clips but not to the original master clips.  This is causing the transcoded clips to not relink.  All the clips that weren't modified and given a tape name are now relinking fine but any one that was modified won't relink.  Is there an easy fix to this?  If I go to the master clips and do a modify/set source on them will it mess all sorts of things up, we have groups and all that jazz so there is no way I am doing this sort of thing without being given some advice.  I can't understand why they would use the tape field for the tape names and not some un used field

    Re: P2 Question

    P2/AMA question:

The most recent spot I am editing was shot on P2.  I copied all the files to an external FW drive then copied that to my media drive on the MacPro where I have started the edit using AMA.  Can I move the project file over to my laptop and keep editing at a different location using the same P2 files on the FW drive?  Kind of like I do when dealing with the same media on both drives in MXF-land.  Do I have the same portability via AMA as I would have with MXF?  Is there a special relink process to go through with AMA/P2 on the second system?  Thanks in advance
