No Bill. I just heard from Bob. He's on the road promoting the new gear so getting back to the forums is tough for him.
I'll give him another tap on the shoulder tomorrow.
Do you really want to know what's wrong...or do you just want me to fix it?
FCP2Avid
Well, I didn't see this as an issue on the lengthy list on the v3.0 readme. But still, I don't want to upgrade my copy of xpress pro to media composer until I hear something about this... mainly cuzz im sitting on the fence on software at the moment.
I feel like Media Composer is gearing itself towards broadcast use, and since i have a good amount of work that stays digital and/or web delivery, Avid may not be the right tool for those jobs.
Still hoping/waiting for word on this.
Thanks
Ok, I talked with Bob at Avid and, so far, they are not seeing this problem there.
Did you guys check your general settings to see if the "NTSC has Setup" button is checked? If so, did toggling it do anything (It's been so long I don't remember f we tried that yet)?
The only thing I can see changing when I toggle the "ntsc has setup" button is that in the YC Waveform monitor, the IRE side of the graph changes so that my black level is either 0 or 7.5 (the voltage stays the same).
Let me ask this. If I shoot a black card with an ntsc HD camera, and while shooting adjust the iris so that the black level recording is IRE = 0, I then capture that media into Avid... should the RGB level be 0 or 16? Also, should the IRE level be 0 or 7.5? I assume this last question is dependant on the camera settings.
As it is now, the RGB value is coming out to be 16 on my tests... but I don't know if this is correct.
By the same notion, if I import a complete black Tiff file with RGB levels 0,0,0... what should the black levels be on import to Avid? 0 or 16?
If you are looking at a digital scope, the black should rest on 0. Analog scopes would be 7.5.
How about the RGB level?

now that's a useful format matrix, don't suppose you have one for 720 and it's many flavours....incl HDV etc.? ....these things seem to be spilt up over many Avid format whitepapers...i.e. he one for HDV, the one for p2, the one for HD RGB etc....it would be nice to have one giant matrix with everything on it.
thanks alot BLKDG
Toby
Avid is working on publishing just such a matrix
I'm not sure if that's good news or bad news...whenever Avid are 'working' on something, it means it'll take minimum 6 months.
hmm....I can't seem to edit my above post.
anyway....back to my original question...what does 'no render' mean ?
Hi all,
So I have been in this limbo of color, levels, IRE, blah blah. I think I'm actually wrapping my head around it and, thankfully, am starting to understand where I have gone wrong.
Without getting into it, let me ask this a question, but first positing a couple statements:
1) Avid works in YUV space.2) on the Avid scopes, 16 RGB is as black as I want to get.3) If i export a quicktime with the above black level, and I select RGB-levels on export, it will pull those down to 0,0,0.
So, I am working with p2 footage that is going directly to quicktimes on the web. Should I be balancing all my black levels at 16 (and 235 for white) and exporting a quicktime with the RGB option selected on output?
If it's solely for internet use and not broadcast, I would grade in 0-255 (turning the limiter off) and possibly grade on a (decent/calibrated) PC monitor, since this is the end market....not TV. I would then export RGB.
