Announcement for Owners of Single Processor G5s

I wanted to let you all know that, as of the next release of the Media composer software, the single processor G5 systems will fall off of Avid's supported configurations list. The only G5s supported will be the dual processors and up.

As the Avid software moves forward, CPU demands will be increasing so, if you are, at all, considering the move up to Intel, the time is approaching.

You have some time before the next release is out (no I don't know when it will be but I know it won't be next week) so I wanted you to be forewarned .

Of course, remember, if you go out and buy a shiny new Intel Mac - you won't be able to run anything Avid because Leopard still isn't supported ... yet.

Not exactly true. Please see the OSX Leopard thread for ways to get around this problem.

Re: Announcement for Owners of Single Processor G5s

Okay, you won't be able to run an officially supported configuration on a brand new Intel Mac.

I'm sure there are ways to 'make it work' but since it's unsupported you won't get anything more than a "sorry, that's unsupported, your problem" from 1-800-800-AVID.

Just a warning - since the single G5 support officially ends with the next version, Leopard support may come with the next version and all of this will be moot.   Besides, the longer you wait for hardware purchases the more you can get for your money.

Well, again, not true. There are ways to get the new CPUs to boot into Tiger until the Leopard version of MC ships.

Re: Announcement for Owners of Single Processor G5s

Right, like I said, there are ways of 'making it work'...

But having to do a full re-install of an older OS, only to have to re-install a newer OS is still a workaround if you ask me.

I'm not trying to argue with you - my point was more that if you have a single G5 Mac, and you're looking to upgrade to stay on a supported config for the next version ... it's probably better to just wait until Leopard is fully supported, otherwise - and thank you for the correction - while possible to get to a fully supported config, it's a bit of workaround, and I would wait.

Thanks as always for the education,

    -Scott

Ok...that's just a lot different than saying the equivalent of "it won't work".

Yes, but I was trying for a bit of humor since he gets asked questions all the time that the answers are within the same thread or a nearby one.

I actually think it was very nice of him to let those on single processors know in advance that they are being phased out rather than letting them know when it comes out.

Re: Announcement for Owners of Single Processor G5s

well.... according to the new specs released today.... a bunch of the Dual Processors are dropping off support as well....  so annoying!  I thought my tricked out G5 would last a few more releases... come on!  I mean after all this waiting for leopard for my new laptop to work, now I'm out in the snow on my desktop system too?   Avid REALLLY wants me to cut with Final Cut Pro, don't they.

Part of the NAB announcements was Leopard support with version 3.

If you want to jump ship and cut on Final Cut because you want to hold onto old hardware I think you'll run into the same stuff.  Take on an extra project and buy a new system!!! =)

Re: Announcement for Owners of Single Processor G5s

Wow!  thanks for the news!  I know Leopard will finally be supported in June, it says so right on the .pdf I sent the link to (which means maybe august if Avid's past performance is any indicator).

I bought a new Macbook Pro to replace a Powerbook and have been waiting patiently for Leopard support to actually use it with MC (and Pro Tools, yet another Avid product Leopard unsupported)... What a bummer when you FINALLY get a release date to support one machine, then you find another is no longer valid.  Not ready to shell out the cash for a perfectly good desktop system while I've got one that's solid... and I've already taken on the EXTRA PROJECTS to get everything else in the studio up to date.  so why should I have to throw even more cash at the problem just on Avid's whim?     answer...because it's Avid's whim... and I've had to do it many times in the past as well.... for the last 12 years I've been buying new systems and sometimes I like to just stick with one that works for a while instead of pissing away money.

And actually I WON'T run into that issue on Final cut for some time...  I'm running the latest version on that box already AS WELL AS MC 2.8... and running multiple streams of HD in FCP just fine...and I expect Apple will support their own G5's for a while... they still consider the G5 a viable machine.  It's only Avid who can't seem to write efficient enough code to keep fairly recent systems qualified.  So It's not about jumping ship, it's about which ship I actually take out to sail and which one gets left in the harbor... that's the way it is when you own both ships.

It's just taken Avid far too long to add leopard support when machines shipping with leopard have been around for 9 months now and then to NOT supporting systems that are currently in the middle of their supported specs...

it IS enough to give you pause when you get reamed from both ends.  but hey, at least there's
    "New Thinking"....
