RomeoEcho: No. But it seems to me that AXP served a certain section of the market for Avid. With less features to support and less system resources to consume, they seemed to be less ardent about running it on a non-certified system. It seems to me that Avid always made a bigger effort to sell certified or turnkey MC workstations than it did with AXP. Take a look at the dealers list and how many dealers can sell AXP vs MC. The MC dealers are always higher level dealers that I am sure were picked because of their ability to (or interest in) deliver(ing) turnkey solutions. By eliminating AXP and stretching MC over to serve the DYI (for lack of a better term) market, it will be interesting to see to what extent that changes.

I really don't understand what you are trying to say or what you are basing it on.
MC software can be bought online from small (Videoguys, B&H, etc) to large retailers. Of course dealers will specialize in tailored solutions using 'qualified' systems. Why would you buy thousands of dollars from a dealer that is not qualified?
MC and AXP have the same qualifications (HP and MacPros) and hardware requirements.
So I don't understand where you are coming from.

If you look at the specs page you will see the answer.
grayboy:Sorry to bang on about this but - what does this mean for 720p25 support?

I think it is quite obvious that this announcement is not changing anything about 720/25p.

Ok, so I'm a student and still just learning my way around AXP. Since everyone seems so excited about this, I gather that MC is a better program than AXP. I'm wondering two things: First, will there still be support for AXP? Second, how much different from each other are the Academic versions of MC and AXP? If there are some substantial differences, would a student be able to "upgrade" from Academic AXP to Academic MC?
D
I edit in my dreams*
As was detailed in the press release:
Existing Avid Xpress Pro customers can upgrade to Media Composer software for $495 USMSRP. Avid will continue selling Avid Xpress Pro software through the end of Q2 2008, and offer support for the product through March 17, 2013. However, effective today, Avid will no longer sell support contracts or offer any further software upgrades for Avid Xpress Pro.
There is no difference in the Avid products between the academic and non-academic versions. The academic versions do not include the 3rd party applications or hard copies of the documentation.
And, as I understand it, there is no upgrade path from academic to non-academic.

Any deadline for the upgrade price?
Thanks.
Since all forms of Xpress Pro are now End of Life, what will happen to those of us with a Studio Xpress dongle? Can we upgrade to Media Composer as well and just carry on as if it was an MC and Studio Toolkit? I have a 4.5 dongle for Xpress Studio that I've been sitting on (Been waiting to upgrade for a while because I also have MC2.8) and am wondering if I need to upgrade to Xpress Studio 5.7 then MC 5.8 or if that is even possible?
Why must I make everything so complicated?
Certified System? Whats that? :) BRING ON THE PAIN!

Academic MC is only $295 ... so maybe as cheap or cheaper than an upgrade would be anyway.
Greate News Avid. I am looking forward to get my MC Copy.
I already found the update on the US-Avid-Store but when will the upgrade be avaliable in the German Online-Store? And how much will the upgrade it be in Europe?
In the "New Communication from Avid" - Tread I found the answer. In the Austria-Avid-Online-Store they want us to pay 605€ which is about 886.93$
This is nearly the double Price of the US Upgrade. Is that true???
Are you really listening?
They must really hate us Europeans.
Lp, m.
Not quite so bad in the UK but still needs explaining. At 2$ (ish) to the £ the upgrade is £247 from the US store but is posted at £365 in the UK.
Am I missing something or are we being ripped off?
Mind you, I like the principle of the upgrade.
