    firestore and HD

    hey guys

ok been running 8 firestore fs4proHD for the last year....   no problems.

but we been running in DV mode only.  with sony PDs and Z1s and DSR450s
and ive had the firestores set to Avid OMF.

what a timesaver on big multicam shoots....

well anyways...  now my client has moved to HD.  true Sony HDcam, 1080/50i   Not HDV.
so now we have our next big series coming up.   and from what i can see, my Firestores are useless now.  If we were using HDV cams we would have been fine, but not with true HD.

my question.  i have to find a replacement to the firestores.   and it needs to be DTE technology.
Is there anything out there for HD, and it needs to intergrate with avid, like DNxHD, or something that we can just drag and drop.   Anything that needs to long import, i dont want, coz then i may as well shoot on tape and capture.

our shows need to turn around FAST.    Record on Saturdays and Tx on sunday.   so no time to digitize for a day....   (unless i was running like 5 composers :(    )

if there is no DTE technology available for HD,  what other formats might you recommend to do similar job like XDcam????   thats a simple drag and drop hey?  (never worked with it)

Have you ever looked into the Ikegami stuff?

    Ikegami DNxHD field recorder HDE-X11

    http://editcam.ikegami.com/index.php/products_recorders/dne_31/

    http://www.avid.com/thirdparty/guide/guide-item.asp?productid=135

I've never used it, but it sounds like something you could use. The field recored looks like it will accept HD-SDI and record it to hard drives as DNxHD.

The FS-100 firestore DTE I just purchased it. It records in MXF and other various formats I use it with my HVX202EN and record DVC PRO HD/100.
Check out the specs pretty sure it would do the job...

    Re: firestore and HD

surely we can invent a solution here :)

here in africa a firestore costst the same as a decent laptop.
if i was on fcp i could use an aja solution  (HD SDi to laptop and capture)
but so far the only DNxHD solution seems to be the Ikegami....  but man that is expensive.
is there some other HD format i can capture that i wont have to "import" into avid?

i vaguely remember trying a demo of some software .....   it gave you realtime scopes etc on a laptop, i think adobe bought that product....  but DNxHD wasnt an option

    Re: firestore and HD

You're thinking of "DVrackHD", that bacame Adobe "On Location". I run with that for longer form projects, it captures firewire fed HD as QTs (natively uses DVCproHD codec I think) so it requires importing (and not fast-almost twice real time) there is a selection for using "AVID codec" (DV100 I think) but that still equires the same lengthy imports. One thing to keep in mind: the file size of HD files are huge, I also use a Firestore FS-100 (100 gig size) and just moving the files from the firestore onto a storage drive takes almost real time (1 hour of footage-45 minute transfer) I've learned to figure the extra amount of time into the workflow.

Not to be sacrsanct (sp?) as a loyal and long time AVID user, but in your situation "On Location" and FCP would be the most efficient. Capture to external drive then just point to the captured stuff as your "scratch folder" and start editing.

    good luck

    Re: firestore and HD

Hey guys I didn't want to start a new thread so if you don't mind I'll ask my? Here re the FS-100.

I'm just wondering seeing that the firestore records using the FAT 32 FILE SYSTEM and has the 2gig limitation in MXF what are you all doing with the material once ingested. For e.g. I just imported about 2 hrs of continual footage and have about 100 clips and just wondered how to join them into one seamless file instead of having this great mess.

Am I missing something here is there a way import the media so you have one continual file?

    Re: firestore and HD

they should just butt up against each other no problem on a timeline...  and run continuous into each other.

    Monkeyberry,

They do but up nicely but I just wondered if there was a way to have a seamless clip (all one piece) not a bunch of clips in a sequence.

    Anyone?..................

No, not in a practical way...  I hate that problem too... everything nice and neat!

So my new wife asks me about my "Avid Forever" tattoo... I told her she's an old girlfriend who was always coming up with new things for me to try...

That's no good I wonder if other NLE's can import as a seamless file?
