Re: Where is 35mbs import for sony EX1

It was never said it was coming in February.  There was supposed to be an announcement concerning Avid's plan for this year and new customer based initiatives, but that's been postponed for a few weeks because of the recent top management changes.

The last I heard, 35Mb/sec is due for a future release, but not in February.

Nope, whoever told you that had no idea what they were talking about.

It's coming, but not in February.

Re: Where is 35mbs import for sony EX1

Is the 35mbs for the EX1 different than the XDCAM 35 that it already supports??

This is from Avid Xpress Pro features page:

Enhanced workflows for XDCAM and P2. New support for bit rates of 18 and 35 Mb/s offers more flexibility to balance picture quality and recording length when capturing XDCAM HD.

    Thanks

    Hi Iain,
Just curious. Are you successfully editing the 25Mb/s stuff? (I'm pretty sure, given that you're on this forum, that you're using a Mac, and AXP)...

    Hi Malcolm,

Yes I'm editing as I type this! What I have been doing in using sony transfer tool on OSX to create a .mov file then import into the AXP. The only reason I needed the new 35mbs for AXP was for some reason on the EX1 you can turn off the timecode and so on sony Transfer tool on mac can't convert! I have since been able to resolve this by using a PC opening rushes on sony transfer tool and convert rushes to 35mbs MXF then importing into sony vegas then exporting from there to .mov QT

When editing in AXP the image is fantastic and no slow sown with system over all AXP rocks in 1080 25P if you need to ask anything else please ask

Re: Where is 35mbs import for sony EX1

Thanks for this Iain... and since you've kindly invited me to ask more... I will! (I'm about to get an EX1, so I'm trying to figure out how to make everything work together) By the way, I'm not sure I understand why you turned off the timecode; I'm guessing you didn't intend to.
If I leave the timecode on, what would my workflow be (for the EX1, AXP and Mac)? As I understand it, out in the field, I can empty my SXS cards right into my MacBook Pro (ExpressCard slot), but if I stay within the MacOS to do this (which I'd like to do), the Sony Clip Browser (Mac version) doesn't convert EX files (either 35Mb/s or 25Mb/s) to MXF... it just copies the camera's BPAV folders onto my desktop.
I THINK I could then (back in my office) use the Xfer Tool to 'wrap' these files to MOV (which is what you've been doing, right?)... which I can then import into AXP.
I guess the downside of this is that it's more time-consuming that if a person was doing it all in the Windows environment (where the Sony Clip Browser converts the EX files to MXF in a matter of minutes). I would imagine it takes a while to import the MOV files into AXP... probably as long as it takes to capture from good old-fashioned tape?
    Thanks Iain,
    Malcolm

    Malcolm,

well I don't know where the camera assistant turned the TC off but it caused a few headaches but in the end we worked it out!

Before anything we decided to have just 1 Flash card in the camera instead of 2 This was because whilst filming the first card fills up and during a shot the second card will start recording causing a spilt this will be a nightmare to sync up so make sure you have 1 card in!

    We shot at 35mbs
Using AXP 5.8 it wont import MXF 35mbs at the moment so we need to convert to .mov

First off two things to download from Sony install driver first before launching XDCAM Viewer

XDCAM TRANSFER TOOL & SXS DEVICE DRIVER DOWNLOADS:
    http://www.sony.co.uk/biz/view/ShowContent.action?site=biz_en_GB&contentId=1193315656825

XDCAM EX CLIP BROWSER (HANDY TOOL FOR VIEWING FOOTAGE BACK INSTANTLY):
    http://www.sony.co.uk/biz/view/ShowContent.action?site=biz_en_GB&contentId=1193315622075

Now were ready to convert the clips into .mov's just add clips and convert very easy and very quick!

Now AXP my project is 1080 25P project I have set all media import to DNxHD 185 MXF
Open a bin go to Import and find the converted .mov and highlight all clips and import

Now the Bad news it's incredibly slow really slow and a 3min.30sec clip takes on average 9min .30 sec!!!!

The picture looks amazing and Avid seems to work really well with the high resolution!

if you send me your email address or if you have ichat i could send you some media

Re: Where is 35mbs import for sony EX1

Iain - thanks again for your thoughtful reply. It's really helping me a lot... it's important I know what I'm getting into with this EX1. Of course, everything could be quite different for both of us, if Avid updates AXP, or Sony updates its Clip Browser... as both of them should be doing soon. Right? I have heard, from various places, that Avid will be addressing some of these issues with its next release.
I'll send you an email tomorrow, in hopes of you then sending me some media to look at (won't have ichat until MacBook Pro arrives).
    Cheers,

Whoever told you that was grossly misinformed.

First rule at Avid, NEVER quote a date for a release.

Second rule at Avid, never promise a feature in a release.

Third Rule at Avid..start over at Rule #1.

    Now you know why.

But BLKDOG, hasn't Avid itself promised this 35Mb/s-compatibility feature, on its website? (or am I mixing up my XDCAM 35Mb/s and EX 35Mb/s?).
