    Viewing HDV footage in XpressDV?

Is it possible to view projects with HDV footage with Avid Xpress DV? (Forgive me, but I looked for answers to this question and could only decipher that *HD* is definitely unviewable.)

I had an older project to which new HDV footage was loaded and added (by another AVID editor, with an HDV camera and a full-featired AVID).

Assuming I can't edit this new project, is there any way to do either/both:
    1) View my project, which currently includes both old & new footage
    2) Load the OMFI media files so I can view just the new HDV footage in its entirety?

I'm in possession of the new project file and all the new OMFI files. There are about 5 hours of new footage, but only about 20 minutes of that footage ended up in the project (if that matters.)

Woudl it help to download codecs from the Pro part of the site? http://www.avid.com/exchange/forums/AddPost.aspx?ForumID=46

    Thanks.

What do you mean when you say "Viewable" Jennifer?

If you mean, can you see the footage in your S/R monitors using Avid's CURRENT software, of course you can. Can you play it back on that old G4 laptop? That's another question entirely. However, you are going to need to upgrade your Avid software to do this. XDV 4.8.1 did not have the capability to do anything HD. Those features were added in the 5.5.x version of 'Pro and MC Soft.

XDV can only work with DV resolutions (ie 720x480)

Depending on the "flavor" of HDV, you may be able to have it down-converted to SD and then you'll be able to work with it on your system.

    Thanks to both of you.

Follow-up question:  Is "down-converting to SD" a process which can be done on pre-existing OMFI files (using a more updated AVID than my own)?  Or do you have to recapture the footage from tapes all over again?

Also, I'm guessing that downconverting would let me look at my new footage, but NOT watch it  incorporated into the project, because the OMFI files will be new and thus not recognized in the project. Right?

No, you can have the more advanced Avid Transcode the files to DV 25 for you and they will relink to the current sequence on your machine if you need to go that way.

Also note that you won't have any HD files if they are OMFI.  HD media files are always MXF.

Again, both great comments, thank you. I didn't know I'd be able to relink to my sequence. Much appreciated!
