How do you know if you're 4X3 safe

I need to make sure that my titles are within 4X3 safe area.  Is there a magic button in Avid?

Turn on the Grid in Title Tool ...

[edit] Note that there are Grid Settings under Settings to customize your display.

    Hi,

    Try this instead.

    1. Open the Command Palette (CTRL+3).

    2. Click on the FX tab.

    3. Find the button that displays the safe title/action grid.  It looks like two little squares; a large one with a smaller one inside it.

    4. Click and drag that button to any blank button on the Composer window.

    5. Close the Command Palette.

    6. Click the safe title/action button you dragged in step 4.

You should now have a safe title/action grid displayed in the Composer window.

    good luck,
    Carl

p.s. v3.0 is pretty old, so the exact location of the safe title/action button in the Command Palette may be different, but it's there.

Re: How do you know if you're 4X3 safe

Thanks.  I do have the title/action grid displayed and I stayed within it.  However, when I took it to a post house where they're putting it on digi beta for me they said my titles were getting cut off and were not within 4X3 safety as I had thought -according to Avid's title/action grid.  The broadcaster who's buying my documentary wants the titles to be 4X3 safe.  Whatt is 4X3 in Avid? How do I know what those lines are set at?  Can I set them to 4X3?

    Is your footage 16x9?

Or did you mistakenly put your titles inside Action Safe and not Title Safe?

Re: How do you know if you're 4X3 safe

    Hi,

If the project is 4x3, then make sure your titles are inside the inner square.  If, as Kenton mentioned, your project is 16x9 and you need the titles to be 4x3 safe, then you have to find the grid settings so you can display 4x3 safe inside the 16x9 grid.

    good luck,
    Carl

p.s. Unless that grid isn't available in Xpress DV 3.0.  I'm not certain.

My titles are inside the inner square.  Is the inner square 4X3? Can the grid settings be changed?

I have a 1:85 mask on the project.  The broadcaster wants it delivered 16X9 full height anaporphic.  So I'm having a post house convert it for me.

That was my mistake as well.  this setting don't exist in XDV.

    Hi,

Since Randall confirmed that XDV 3.0 doesn't have the grid settings you need, you'll have to look for a workaround.  If you have access to Photoshop, you could draw a simple grid you could then import into XDV and lay over your titles temporarily to make sure they're ok.  Unfortunately, I don't know the numbers you're going to have to use for the grid, but someone on here might chime in, or you could see if anybody at the post house could talk you through it, or you could Google for it.

    good luck,
    Carl

Someone did mention to me to create a graphic in photoshop and set the alpha channel to 105 pixels.

I'm still trying to figure that out. How do I set the pixels?  In size of image setting, width and height?

Do you know what the other setting -- "4x3 safe OUTSIDE the 16x9 grid" will show you?  I've never understood what it shows?
