    Re: 5.8 Buffer Overrun Detected

ok, so just to sum it all up. you need to have a quadro fx 550 - 3500 card (not greater than 3500) and driver version 91.85 ONLY (compatible with cards from 550 -3500 only) and you need QT 7.3 NOT any other version, that includes 7.5.5.  this combination will fix the buffer overrun, and nothing else!  I spent weeks researching this damn error!  AHHH

    reference:

    http://www.avid.com/cgi/kbase-redir.aspx?p_faqid=73519

Quadro fx 3700 and greater will not, nor never work with Avid Express, and will ONLY work with media composer 3.x or greater!   You're all welcome!

    Thanks for the info.

Every time I try to do even the simplest things, the program crashes because of buffer overrun. I have tried to get rid of this problem, but without success.

    My sys specs:

    Xpress pro 5.8,

    QT 7.3,

PNY nVidia quadro fx 500 128mb agp 8x card with 91.85 driver,

    xp pro sp2,

    Intel D865PERL motherboard

    Intel Pentium 4E, 3000Mhz

    3072mb RAM

According to the official sys requirements (http://www.avid.fi/fi/products/Xpress-Pro/system-requirements.asp), this should be enough. I used to have Xpress DV, and it ran perfectly. I have searched the web, but haven´t found an ansver to this problem. Any ideas what I should do?

Is the minimum graphics card requirement really fx 550 and not fx 500? If so, I wonder why this information can not be found on the official sys req.?

    Re: 5.8 Buffer Overrun Detected

I have managed to narrow the problem down a bit. I can do capture, splice-in, overwrite, trim, lift and other simple tasks. But when try to extract, dissolve, use a motion effect, etc., I get the following:

    Microsoft visual c++ runtime library

    Buffer overrun detected!

    Program: ...m Files\Avid\Avid Xpress Pro\AvidXpresspro.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

And then the bloody thing crashes.

Could it be that my fx 500 graphics card is too poxy for xpress pro, although it is within official system requirements?

Could anyone help me with this, or is my only option to buy a new graphics card?

    Re: 5.8 Buffer Overrun Detected

Ok, so now i am a little discouraged! I got the fx 3700, which is the first fx card to not support 91.85 driver version (my luck of course) so now i am waiting for an fx 3000 to arrive. I had hoped to just install it, and Wham, problem solved, but it sounds like that may not work, based on your system specs, and the fact that you are still having the same problem. I believe the fx 500 isa OK too, but i thought you needed more than 128K to run properly.... maybe not... check out this link, it tells you how to turn down your hardware accelerator in the 91.85 driver control panel. this may help:

    http://www.avid.com/cgi/kbase-redir.aspx?p_faqid=73519

It may also be your processor as well. everything i read says core duo, or xeon. i have a quad core (which of course it doesn't actually list) , and i am going to call Avid today to discuss my processor, as well as this issue.  Tech support won't talk to you if you don't have a support ID, but i usually can get them to answer a few questions b/f they cut me off, so i will see whats up!  It may come down to having to upgrade to Media Composer..... ugh

Thanks for the tip, I checked the link, but since I have only one monitor, there wasn't anything to change (I hope Xprs pro runs with one monitor...)

I don't think processor is the problem, Pentium 4 1.8ghz is also listed on the specs and I have Pentium 4E 3ghz.

Memory should be 1gb ddr2 sdram, I have 3gb ddr sdram, but I think that shouldn't be a problem either, 3gb ddr is better than 1gb ddr2, right?

One thing I'm missing is Media Player, which hasn't worked since I downgraded from SP3 to SP2, I guess I'll have to re-install xp (but i doubt that it will help)

I find it a bit annoying that you have to use media Player 10 and not 11 which is the latest. any experiences about 9.5 codecs, are they easy to find?

    Re: 5.8 Buffer Overrun Detected

Ok guys, this is what I have found out. I bought my copy from a guy, who had it from a guy who knew another guy. 5.7 was the first copy I bought and this dude said 5.8 would work with the same dongle.

In short: my version of Xpress 5.8 was an illegal cracked copy! I found out that there are downloadable copies on mininova and the pirate bay that are the same as my, dysfunctional copy.

    BE WARE OF PIRACY!

Even with Quadro FX 3400 and a top spec comp custom built specifically for Avid, i am encountering the same problem!!!! have been through the forums and have tried a number of different things to resolve the issue but to no avail! Anyone actually got an answer for this cos all i see is more and more questions??

Without knowing a detail description of your system specs, it would be near impossible to troubleshoot your problem. FYI - 9 out 10, overrun/underrun is hardware config related.

    Re: 5.8 Buffer Overrun Detected

OK, i hve spent over 2 months figuring out the problm... i have posted on here about specs etc.. and ... as it turns out, it is the torrent copy of 5.8 that is corrupt. I don't know if it is a joke, or a mistake, but it is a corrupt version, and will never work completely. I just spent $3200 on Media Composer, so my problem is solved, but unfortunately 5.8 from the torrent site won't work  :-(

Great, that is one of the reasons you should use legal and not illegal software.

    Re: 5.8 Buffer Overrun Detected

Well, i agree with you. and i just spent $3200 on MC , but how was i supposed to know if i like the program if i couldn't try it out first?  It's not like Avid offers a trial version!  I don't know many people that would drop those kind of duckets on a program they've never used.  So, that is prob why more people are switching to Final Cut....  Just my thoughts...

Overhere we have resellers who are demonstrating the package. And allow me to play with it. And there are lot's of other resources available to get an impression of the program.

    Re: 5.8 Buffer Overrun Detected

    Hi riskymd,

I've come in to this debate late having just bought a new computer and installing Xpress Pro 8. Same buffer overrun problem on certain commands (eg. cut).  You seemed to be one of the few offering sensible solutions. As you posted these solutions about a year ago I want to ask if they still apply or have there been any improvements since? And one another question on Avid start up I'm being asked to use Wndows Media Player greater than version 9. How important is this?

    Cheers,

    Mark.
