You need to use NVidia based video cards. Quadro is the official card. It will work, in most cases, with GeForce cards.

That's why I said: I could have known that. However, on some notbooks the ATI drivers are supported... Let's try to sell my as good as new and rarely used graphics card and buy an nvidia
Same problem here. Can't CUT, RENDER, DISSOLVE, not even place a KEYFRAME. Trying to GANG 2 audio channels together (in audio mixer) also turns up a buffer overrun error.
Runnning 5.8 on an Intel E4500 2.2GHz dual core with 3Gb RAM. OS is an XP Pro SP2. The videocard is a GF 8600 GS therefore not a Quadro, hopefully this is not the reason to my problems.
Installed latest drivers and supporting software (QT,WM. etc.)
Any ideas anyone?

There are some people reporting the 8600 giving them problems. Search the forum. One fixed his by disabling Thread Optimization in the NVidia Control Panel.
Funny... replacing the Sapphire ATI Radeon card I bought a 8600GT and keeping the same ol' problems. Even after a complete system format and re-installment.
Downgraded my XP from SP3 to SP2 and downgraded Quicktime from 7.5 to 7.3.
Will try fiddling with the driver.
Well... i've got the same prob for add edit, render and coo...
Here is my configuration:
Win XP Pro
1Gb ram
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 (128 mo)
motherboard: sis 760, amd hammer
audio: realtek AC'97
I think it should be what you need...
Can you help me??
Just restating Dom's post above:
Dom Q. Silverio:You need to use NVidia based video cards. Quadro is the official card.
Since nVidia have split their drivers into Quadro and GeForce types now, while as Dom said:
Dom Q. Silverio: It will work, in most cases, with GeForce cards.
-was true in the past, it is no longer the case. You can patch your card to look like a Quadro using Rivatuner, but how successfull it will be I can't say.
So, i can't use a GeForce? i have an 8800GTS and i get the same Overrun error, and i now have no hair left..... i tried the "disable threaded optimization" that didn't work either! ahhhhh
how do i use rivatuner? what specifically would i have to do to set up my geforce card to not get my buffer overrun error?
thanks
do a search on these forums, lot's of info.

I have researched a million forums, and articles, and have come to realize that it is my video card. i have an NVIDIAGeForce 8800GTS, and .... of course.... i need an NVIDIA Quadro FX1300 or greater card to operate Avid properly. the older versions of AVID worked fine on even my crappy laptop, but now... not so much.. especially in HD. So, it is with a heavy heart that i must buy a better VC. anyone want a brand new 8800GTS? great for gaming, i suppose..... sigh
m also havin the same problem...as soon as i try to cut a video i gt this error...
plz reply as fast as u can....
Thanks...
My pc Spces..
AMD PHENOM 9550 quad core
ASUS M3A 78 EM
2 gb ram..
No Graphic card installed ..m usin onboard..
Plz help...
Dude, did you read my post? You need an NVIDIA QUADRO FX 550 or greater card for the error to go away! i was using an NVIDIA geForce 8800GTS (which costs around $400) and that still wasn't enough! you are using an onboard card..... that DEFINETLY isn't enough..... upgrade your card!
