    Hi,

Perhaps you have Automatic Updates turned on, and your drivers were automatically updated.  That's what I'd check first.

    good luck,

You should check your Quicktime version too. I've seen such an issue on a machine with enabled automatic updates of QT.

My automatic updates is on but I have had it on for 3 months so I don't know why that would make a difference.  Also, I didn't update quicktime. So I don't see how that would be the problem as well.

    Re: Video Playback Again

    Hi,

Well, if Windows automatically updated your video card drivers, and the new ones are incompatible with Media Composer, that could cause playback problems.

Similarly, if Quicktime is set to automatically update itself, and it did so without you knowing it did, that could cause playback problems.

Since the system was working, and now it's not, and you didn't change anything, you have to look for things that changed without you knowing they changed.  Automatic updates will do that.

    good luck,

    Carl

Ok thank you for clearing that up.  So then how do I guess go back in updates or something.

We've battled this problem off and on for about a year. I think I finally have the cause - corrupt setting files. The key moment was when one of our students was ready to take a baseball bat to the system because the video playback was working when he started a new project but then suddenly no more video. Just frozen images. Rebooting wouldn't fix it. Power cycling the deck wouldn't fix it. Nothing, nadda. Then as a last ditch test I opened a different project, and "shock," the video was playing. Returned to his project and no video. Quit Avid, opened his project folder, deleted all *.avs files, restarted Avid, opened his project, and the video was working again. Glory be.

For some reason Avid's setting files keep corrupting themselves, resulting in no video playback. It happened again today to another student. This time deleting the project setting file didn't fix it. But, deleting the user setting file did.

I can't find any way to forcibly recreate the problem so I don't know how to report it to Avid. Maybe Avid should add some kind of setting file corruption test. And, if it discovers a corrupt setting file offer to delete it.

In the meantime, try deleting your project setting and user setting files anytime video playback stops working.
