Forcing a drive to be read only on Mac System 9

Is there a way on Mac System 9 to force a drive to be read only? Or to force Media Composer (11.2.6) to filter them out for all rendering, digitizing, etc? I have some drives that need to be readable, but I don't want anything new written to them.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I tried this once and it kept crashing the AVID. If you ask me, it's more trouble than it's worth.
