Hi All
Thought I'd add my experiences to this. I'm in post on a short at the moment, shot on Red. Our post path is as follows:
- Using Metacheater create an Avid ale file from Red's QT Ref files. This is the equivalent of a flex file for you film people out there, containing all the metadata from the rushes.
- On an OSX machine batch import the clips into Avid, using the same QT Ref flies
- Cut
- Export a CMX3600 EDL
- Import the EDL into FCP, and export as an XML
- Use Crimson to produce a conform in .r3d raw files.
- Export the conform from RedCine as .dpx sequence, maintaining the 4k res and high bit depth
- Take dpx files to grading house
- create HD masters and (maybe) a DCI 2k master.
It's a faff, but it works. We had a few additional gotchas (no sound import on the old OSX Avid we used, requiring seperate import and Autosynching on the PC machine, and the half res proxies giving junk when importing, causing us to go back to the quarter res proxies instead) but overall it's been fine.
Whenever colleagues say it sounds like a nightmare, I just remind them of the effort involved in cutting film and getting a neg cut. This is a breeze in comparison. I'm looking forward to the workflow becoming more streamlined but in the mean time we have some stunning images on our film. Which are easily worth all the work.

Hi Jonas
You can now work directly on Red with Quantel.
Cheers
