Unity V5, macintel, Fibre manager disconnects sporadically

    Hello avid lovers,
I have recently started having a sporadic bug where the fibre manager annouces that the connection has disconnected. There is no reason, it happens even when no one has been using the machines for some hours. The 2 machines do not disconnect at the same time. I have checked the atto card position and swopped the QLogic ports to make sure that it is not  something physical. Once reconnected the fibre manager reconnects and all is well for another few hours.

I do not know if the another problem is related but I am also getting a bug where by sometimes the MC announces that it cannot update the .msn on a partition. I crash out and reconnect, and all is well again.

the config for the 2 clients are :

    Server
    Unity V5

    Station1
    Macintel 2x2.66ghz, 3GO ram
    MC 2.7.5
    Fibre Celerity FC-41ES - driver version V3.0
    Adrenaline model 0x1, 0x14001
    fibre manager v5.0 (2140)

    Station2
    Macintel 2x2.66ghz, 3GO ram
    MC 2.7.5
    Fibre Celerity FC-41ES - driver version V3.0
    Mojo analog rev D
    fibre manager v5.0 (2140)

Check the usual suspects like computer ID name, OS version, date/time sync, try a new OS user, etc.

Here is something hidden in the Avid Read Me that has helped me no end. It is Mac specific

If you use the ATTO Configuration tool to upgrade the firmware on the ATTO Fibre Channel
host adapter board, the Connection Mode setting reverts to the default setting of AL
    (Arbitrated Loop).
Workaround: To correct this, you must reset the Connection Mode parameter in the
    Configuration tool to PTP Preferred.
To reset the Connection Mode setting:
    1. Do one of the following:
t (Windows) Click the Start button, and select Programs > ExpressPCI Configuration
    Tool.
t (Macintosh) Navigate to the folder where you installed the ATTO Configuration
tool, and then double-click ATTO Configuration.app.
    The ATTO Configuration tool opens.
    2. In the Device Listing window, navigate to the appropriate channel on your host adapter.
    The NVRAM Configuration tab opens.
    Limitations
    31
    3. Click the Connection Mode menu, and select PTP Preferred.
    4. Click Commit.
n You must restart your system for the change to take effect.

You can see all your clients connection types by getting into the QLogic switch, look for the letters on the ports.

I have just seen that avid has produced a white paper on fibre cables. In it, is mentioned that using the wrong cable or even unrolling the cable badly can lead to all sorts of problems such as disconnections and inability to find files etc.

Apart from the IO tool in the Unity folder, is there anyother way of checking the integrity of an installation?

"is there anyother way of checking the integrity of an installation?"

    1) Hire an Avid ACSR to check the hardware/software setup.

    2) Hire a Fiber Cable Contractor to check your cables.  They have specialized meters to evaluate  fiber cables.

    Media Composer 3.1.1 w/Mojo (analog), HP xw8400, 1xQC 3.0GHz, 4GB RAM, FX 3700, 500GB Boot, 1 x 1TB internal SATA media drive, 3-Ware 9690SA-8E, 2 x SansDigital... [view my complete system specs]

Yes, and your warranty will be null and void and you will perish poor in the Unsupported Land.

Avid also likes to talk about 'corrupt files', please make sure you check for those.

Just hire a freelance ACSR to check for you.

    Common things to check --

FC Switch (both the software config and general hardware integrity). Sometime people mistakenly connect a client in a storage port on their FC switch.

tipping of fibre (try using another port or running a direct line to the switch)

see if you have any errors from Monitor Tool

You should then contact Avid directly. The forum is really intended for user to user help.

I would start by doing a clean install if possible.

I had that problem for a while in two different systems (Mac and Pc). Both were the Atto announcing their own death. One day they simply stop working. Once substitued, everything was fine.

    Hope it helps.
