    MC 2.7.5 playback problems

    Hi,

I've upgraded my OS to 10.4.10, upgraded QT to 7.2 and then uipgraded to MC 2.7.5. I'm running a G5 Quad 2.5 GHz, Adrenaline box and I'm using a 3 TB raid array.

Installation seemed to go without a hitch and firmware update on the Adrenaline hardware seemed fine, However, now basic playback hangs for 20-30 secs when clicking on the timeline or switching from source to record windows. It even hangs in trim mode loop playback.

I've tried the usual fixes, Disk Warrior, permissions etc. I've tried previously captured media and new media, HD and SD, and two different drive arrays and get the same playback performance.

As I've updated the OS and QT I think going back to any previous install is going to be difficult. Should I just uninstall 2.7.5 and try a fresh install? Anyone else having similar problems.

    Thanks

One other thing. While I can capture HDCam via HD SDI when I try to capture SD DigiBeta via SDI, I constantly get aborted due to video overrun.

Hansa, I'm going to look into this for you today. Another site reported poor performance with the Avid arrays after upgrading.

Yeah... I also have an Avid Video RAID and performance was so bad I had to roll back to 2.7.2.  Somethings not quite right with the relationship of 2.7.5 and the Video RAID.  I was getting terrible stuttering video on clips and sequences that were perfect only hours before in 2.7.2.  Random beach ball hangs for 20 seconds or so.  Also I went from no bus errors in months to an average of 4 or 5 a day.  Dumb stuff like clicking on the timeline or opening a clip from a bin would bomb the system.  I rolled back to 2.7.2 and all the issues went away.

One important note though is that the firmware did 'not' downgrade upon re-installation of 2.7.2.  As a result, every time I opened a project the Avid would crash.  I manually removed all the Avid files in the Library/Receipts folder and re-installed.  Still no firmware downgrade, but the Avid is purring along nicely now.  No bus errors, no stuttering

    Re: MC 2.7.5 playback problems

Hi Todd, I tried to get back to 2.7.2 but like you, the application crashes out with "Bus error" in thread "Main Thred" at address Oxbfffcc20 every start up. I've tried deleting the files in the Library/receipts folder but still crashes on project start. I had upgraded to OS 10.4.10 and QT 7.2 for MC 2.7.5 and don't think I can easily downgrade these elements. Are you running 10.4.10 and QT 7.2 with MC2.7.2 successfully? Thanks

I am running 2.7.2 on OS 10.4.10 and QT 7.2.  I was before the 2.7.5 upgrade.

Make sure you uninstall 2.7.2, delete all the receipt files and 'then' re-install 2.7.2.  Basically, you gotta manually remove everything.  One other possible culprit is Library/Application Support/Avid/MAC OSX Startup.  I did 'not' have to touch this folder.  But removing that startup file or even the whole darn Avid folder in Application Support may make this work for you.

It's a bear man.  Let me know if this works for you.  Also, let me know if you get prompted to downgrade your firmware on the Adrenaline DNA.

    Re: MC 2.7.5 playback problems

I was having similar problems with my SCSI raid. Apparently it had something to do with an ATTO .kext extension. (ATTOExpress PCI4.kext). After talking to ATTO I was instructed to remove the extension (System>Library>Extensions> ATTO Express PCI4.kext). One I did and rebooted the stuttering/delays went away. Then there was new .kext download available at ATTO. I then installed this and I'm still stutter/delay free.

Nice moves Scott.... I'll give this a crack tomorrow morning and bump back up to 2.7.5.  Got a link for that .kext download?

    Re: MC 2.7.5 playback problems

Hi Todd, When I originally re-installed MC 2.7.2 it went through the firmware update process and power cycle the hardware. I eventually got 2.7.2 installed and working. When I reopened my HD sequence I still had hanging ball problems but this time the appearance of exception messages. This sequence had been created in 2.7.3 so logic suggested that I upgrade to 2.7.3. I did and so far its far more stable than 2.7.5, although if I click around the timeline and stop/start fast enough I can recreate the symptom. I'm still having trouble capturing SD digibeta via SDI without getting video overruns every third capture or so with no rhyme or reason to it. For the time being I'm staying on 2.7.3. Let me know your experience with the Atto upgrade, perhaps my video overrun problem is still connected with this. Thanks hansa

    Re: MC 2.7.5 playback problems

You will need to log into the ATTO site http://www.attotech.com/
and then go to the software downloads. Depending on your PCI card the download is located in the ATTO Express PCI host adaptors, likely PCI UL5D. YUou should also update the PCI flash bundle. I still have the upaters on my desktop so if you have problems, I can email the updaters to you. However I would try removing the ATTOExpressPCI4.kext file first to see if that makes any difference. Regardless installing the new drivers and flashing the PCI card seemed towork fine for me.

    Re: MC 2.7.5 playback problems

A huge THANK YOU Scott. My problems resurfaced using MC 2.7.3 but I took your tip and upgraded the drivers for the Atto card and so far everything is back working for me. I guess its a requirement of moving up to OS 10.4.10. Anyway I'll stay on 2.7.3 for a while until a get the nerve to move back up to 2.7.5. Anyone out there having similar problems should definately upgrade the Atto drivers.

    Re: MC 2.7.5 playback problems

is it correct to say, this is an issue with SCSI storage, Atto drivers and 10.4.10? This issue does not exist with 10.4.9, and has nothing to do with the version of MC...

    Re: MC 2.7.5 playback problems

I had no problems running 10.4.9 and 2.7.3. So it must have had something to do with the install of 10.4.10 or 2.7.5. (I did both at the same time) Either the Mac OS or the AVID updater installed the faulty/old ATTO driver in the extensions folder. I don't which one. After talking to ATTO they said it could have been that the old ATTO driver was corupted somehow. Regardless of what the cause was, the new driver have been causing no problems and it seems to be a SCSI ONLY problem. I had no problem running my SATA array and firewire drives. Regardless I'm glad to have been of some help and to share what had been a bit of a hell week for me.

FWIW, I was running 10.4.10 with 2.7.2 with no issues.  I've since upgraded to 2.7.5, updated the ATTO drivers and flashed the UL5D with the newest firmware flash.  Thus far... smooth as silk.
