Hm, ok.  Is my best bet to use boot camp to instal Windows XP, and instal Avid on that?

What's Avid like to use in Windows (never done it, or seen it before)? Does it have the same feel to it?

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

    Hi,

I just read your posts Ethos. Since you will have a new laptop you might consider right off the bat reinstalling Leopard from the install disc. You would first use the Disk Utility software to re-partition the internal hard drive to have 2 partitions. The second 1 can be quite small (10 to 20GB) and on that one you can install Tiger.

The reason I suggest this is that the Tiger (10.4.11) partition can remain static with the proper OS version and QT version for AXP 5.8. Then you're Leopard partition can continue to be updated with the latest and greatest but Xpress Pro stays happy on the Tiger partition.

It sounds like there's no reason for you to install XP using Bootcamp.

    Cheers,

Thanks everyone for your help! I got it all figured out (minus some audio stutter issues)

I went in last night to make my trade-in, and they got me all set up. I'm running 10.5.2, but with a 15 Gig partition that runs 10.4.11 so that Avid is happy. The guy at the Genius bar did it all for me, but watching what he did, I realized how easy it would have been to do myself.

Man, I was lucky, too. They couldn't fix my old Powerbook, and so they offered me a new 17" MacBook Pro for the repair price.... are you ready for this? $992 (plus tax) !!! I was shocked. It's not even a refurb'ed unit. Putting up with no audio for 6 months was hell, but getting a $992 MBP out of it was (almost) worth it.

So, again, thanks all, for your help!

Has anybody dared upgrade to Quicktime 7.4.5? How's it going?

The rest of the specs would be OS 10.5.2 with Xpress Pro 5.8 or higher.

I installed it "for fun" on my new MacBook Pro which came with the latest QuickTime and it seems perfectly happy. I haven't pushed it though.

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

Would you please report back after you have road tested it a bit?  The latest FCP update requires QT 745, and I'm reluctant to upgrade either until I know it won't break AXP.

    Thanks,

    Jim

Back-rev the CPU to Tiger. I've detailed how to do this in several posts. Apple doesn't want you to do it but it is possible.

    Hey 'Dog,

Where are those posts? I can't find 'em.

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

Alright!  As you can tell im new to this Avid community and new to Avid in general to be honest.  Anyways, I got a new 24" iMac with 2.8GHZ extreme Core 2 Duo a few months ago.  Which I was going to use for Editing because i've been editing using Final Cut for awhile now.

I found there to be lots of quirks and things in Final Cut and for some reason I didn't really like it. So when I found the new Media Composer deal for $295(academic) I was super excited.  So I bought it and you can probably guess the rest of the story.

Installed it, realized things were working a little strange or not working at all.  THEN I realized it wasn't compatible with Leopard yet.  I had checked before I bought it and saw on the Media Composer website that Leopard was a supported opperating system.  Unfortunately I didn't see the star at the end which references you to the little line at the bottom saying "*Requires version 3 software, availability planned for June 2008.".

So does this mean I just wasted $300 on something I can't even use?  Because that would really suck.

Anyways, hopefully someone can fill me in on the more specific details.

    Thanks

"So does this mean I just wasted $300 on something I can't even use?"

That would be the overly dramatic version of your situation.  However, in just a few weeks, v3.0 will be available, and Leopard "will" be supported.  So, no you didn't "waste" your money.  And, although as a footnote, the lack of Leopard support  was detailed.

Really? A free upgrade!  That sounds pretty Badass.  I didn't think anything was free anymore.  Thanks for the info.

Yeah the lack of Leopard support was definitely pretty clear once I thought about it.  But I never really looked at it when I first ordered it.  I guess I was just excited about finally getting Avid and it wasn't going to cost me $5000 so I wasn't thinking clearly.  Glad to hear im not going to have to pay lots of money for an upgrade though.  Thanks again for all the info!

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

Heads up for those of you who might have Avid running on a Leopard machine and will be installing Media Composer 3.0 when it's released: you need to have a "clean" system before running the 3.0 installer.  That means removing any Avid and Digidesign stuff before doing the installation.  Failure to do so may result in kernel panics upon restart after installing 3.0.  Having a system backup would be a good idea too.

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

Exactly. When Avid posts  the release on Monday, we will be recommending that, if you are installing on Leopard, that you do a complete archive and install of the OS. If you are into being especially careful, a complete wipe and install isn't going to far.  The cleaner your BSD is when you install the Avid software,  the happier you will be.

It's also good to see that these OS recommendations are listed in the ReadMe.  Hopefully, people will.
