    Two issues with 2.7.5

MacBook Pro, OSX 10.4.10, QT 7.2 ... install went well, no issues.  Launch Avid, and I keep getting an error, "Exception: Operation not supported, filename: msmFMID.pmr".  this happens several times during launch, and periodically during use.  Also, just recently, upon launch, some of the tabs in the Project Window, or all of the data, is temporarily gone.  Sometimes, I can see Bins and Settings, but the rest are gone.  Other times, the entire window is blank.  As soon as I touch either Bins or Settings, the others appear.  Or if I click around in the empty window, the window prioperkly populate.

I've already trashed User Settings, Project Settings, MC State, Site Settings, Site Attributes, and all msm's ...

Anyone else seeing either of these symptoms?

I'm mostly a PC guy, but I recall hearing about these on Mac ....

You will get these errors if your drives are formatted FAT-32....

    Possible?

The internal is Mac OS Extended (Journaled), the media drive (an external FW drive) is Mac OS Extended, and the Bootcamp partition is NTFS.  Sigh.

Could this be a repair permissions type problem?
I just noticed on a MCA 2.7.5 PC install that during the install Avid checked lots of project folders properties. (I have never seen this before  but it may just have been a background process in the past)
FWIW my impression whilst installing this was that this version seemed to  be much more thorough / careful in what it uninstalls and installs.

Good thought.  I uninstalled all of the MC components, ran Repair Disk Permissions, and reinstalled.  Same error.

Unmount the bootcamp partition. That's what's doing it I'll bet.

    Re: Two issues with 2.7.5

I just upgraded from Media Composer 2.7 to MC 2.8 on a Mac 2x2.66 Dual Core Intel xeon running OS 10.4.11 Does this mean I will never be able to read PC formatted NTFS drives. The Avid we do most of our digitizing on is a PC and the partitions we digitize to are part of a shared storage system. We never had a problem reading these partitions in 2.7. Is there a way around this or do I have to go back down to 2.7?

Have you tried Paragon NTFS for OSX? I have installed it but not tried 5.8 with it yet.

    Re: Two issues with 2.7.5

    Bump.. interesting thread.

Any more ideas on best formatting for cross-compatibility? I have MacDrive on a desktop PC system (running Xpress Pro 5.6.4) and it has worked well in the past with drives from another company.

Configuring a new MacBookPro system with MC3.0 and just partitioned the internal drive to 'boot'  (MacOS Extended - Journaled) and 'media' (MacOS Extended - not journaled) but can't work out which is the best formatting for an external drive, to ensure it's readable back at the PC desktop for DVD authoring.

What of Paragon??? Anyone recommend this or another route?

    Re: Two issues with 2.7.5

I have a Mac as my main editing system now.  I have many clients who send me drives with media on them, they have PC - therefore the drives are formatted NTFS.

I use Paragon on my Mac to allow me to R/W to NTFS.

I also have a PC on my network that in worst case scenarios I could connect the drive to and copy the media across the network.

    Concerning this -

    Susi:
just partitioned the internal drive to 'boot'  (MacOS Extended - Journaled) and 'media' (MacOS Extended - not journaled)
    - I would seriously advise against using your main system drive for any media.

    Re: Two issues with 2.7.5

What do you end up with in that big internal drive? Seems such a shame to spend money on a nice new laptop with masses of space and still have to lug another power cable, transformer and socket adaptor around in the backpack... sigh, the reality is always a bit different from the daydream! (and the advertising)

But seriously, there's been some different advice on this so anyone else's experience would be good to hear.

That's why you get external portable drives that are powered by the USB or FW800 port.  I just picked up a 250GB Toshiba from BestBuy for $100.  Just plugs into the USB port - makes it a breeze for taking anywhere.
