Help! Xpress Pro to Media Composer translation problems...

    Hello all!

Cutting a short film with a deadline:

Sequences on Xpress Pro 5.6 on OS1.4 at home on AVR15s,

1:1 (online) media is at work on a Meridien MC11.2.6 on OS9.4 and a Unity.

Job is SD NTSC finishing to digi beta.

I've tried AAFing, ALEing, opening direct, but I can't get the XPress Pro sequences to open up or import on the MC, even as a media offline so that I can relink to the Unity footage.

Do I really have to export as an EDL and reimport into the MC???

What is it that I'm missing here?

Before I get into too much detail here, I'm assuming that what you want to do is move a project from an Avid XPRO platform to a Media Composer on a Unity system and uprez the media.  Is that correct?

OK, you'll need a portable hard drive (recommend 80 to 100 g capacity) and copy the project file folder and the OMFI media folder.  Then, load the projects folder into the Avid Projects folder on the :c drive of Media Composer and the OMFI folder to the appropriate media drive (or Unity workspace) at the root level. Then see what you have...some relinking may be necessary.

Re: Help! Xpress Pro to Media Composer translation problems...

Have four half terra LaCie's that I use for this purpose. A few days ago I consolidated the AVR15 stuff onto one of them, moved the projects folder on to the drive as well. Mounted it at work and the MC at work wouldn't open the project. Gave an unspecified error "unable to open".

And yes, I know I have duplicate media on them, I renamed the OMFI Mediafiles folder containing the 1:1 stuff, but MC wouldn't even open the XPress Pro project at all.

I even tried just the projects with no media drives mounted, just to see if I had a MDM conflict. No luck.

    Specifically, MC gives the error:

Unable to open the file: XXXname
    Exception: DOMAIN_COPYOUT_FAILED
    Exception: COMPRESSED_AUDIO_FORMATS_NOT_SUPPORTED

Which is strange considering it was all in 48k 16bit stereo AIFFs...

You say you've "consolidated" the files to the portable drive, but have you tried just copying the file folders and moving them without using consolidate?  Also, you mention renaming the OMFI folder...if you rename that folder, the application will not find it when looking for media.

    Larry
    Thanks for your help.

Update: picture translates fine, the XPro project opens up in MC directly - if there's only video tracks.

There's a discrepancy here between the AIFFs. Both programs claim to be using 16bit 48k stereo (in the Media Managers and bin readouts) but they won't talk to each other.

Well at least I've gotten it narrowed down some

So if you look at the audio clips in their bin and display sampling rate and bit depth, they all identify as 48K and 16 bit?  If so, go to your user settings and under "audio project" "main" tab, make sure the sample rate is set for 48kHz.  If you have a mix of different sampling rates, choose "always" for the option "convert sample rates when playing".

Also, on the project timeline, in the timeline fast menu go to clip color and choose "offline".  This will make any offline clip in your sequence show up as bright red, so you can verify whether the audio media you're referring to is on or off line.

Re: Help! Xpress Pro to Media Composer translation problems...

Another thing to do after moving files between platforms is to reconstruct the database for the media files.  In the OMFI folder, do a sort by date and bring the most recent to the top.  You will see two files that identify by type as Avid Media Database.  Delete these two files.  On re-launch the system will detect the missing files and build new ones.  These files tend to get corrupted from time to time, especially when moving between platforms and are often responsible for media offline issues.

I'm running into the exact same problem : XPro 5.8 on Mac was used to import a few sound FX from a library. Some were AIFF, some were WAV but everything was imported at 48k/16bit (conversion done by the XPress on import, maybe that's a clue), they play fine in XPress. I transfered all the OMFi to the PC Media Composer 11 and I got this error message when the application scanned the drives, and I get it each time I try to open the bin containing the sound FX. Very strange because on the XPress, they show up in the bin as 48k/16bit. So they're not compressed.

Did you ever find a solution?
