Re: Are You Getting Bus Errors?

Over the last several days I have had a few Bus Errors...they have either happened when trying to edit a motion effect clip, or worse yet, during autosave.

We are also on a LanShare, so I have taken the permissions as far as I can, but since our projects and Attic are on the LanShare, I'm not sure I can completely solve this issue.

It might have something to do with writing to the Attic, as the last crash I had a couple of minutes ago modified the date/and time of my project folder, but no additional copies of bins were saved.

OK...I'm editing my post here because I have learned a few things...

Once you get the Bus Error messages, you are screwed unless to completely reboot the computer. What I was seeing recently is that after I restarted just the app, I wasn't able to render a clip more than once, otherwise I got the error. This included Timewarp effects and Matte Keys. You don't even have to change any parameters...just render, re-render...crash!

Once I rebooted, things that caused the Bus Error don't cause them now. So the moral of the story is...reboot!

Now, if I could just figure out what caused the first one.

Well, back to work. I'm not editing on a Saturday to troubleshoot this stupid software!

Re: Are You Getting Bus Errors?

These bus errors are really pissing me off now. I get them very frequently on projects that involve a lot of color effects, transitions, MovingPicture, 3D Warp and Timewarps. I now average 1 bus error for every 45 minutes of work. I need a solution!!

We don't have the Mac Pro yet...this is the Quad G5, with 2.7.

And I am also losing my hair...this is nuts! At least two dozen crashes yesterday and today!

    Kevin and kangelis,

Have you both applied the permissions fix that I listed in the first post of this thread to 'every' folder associated with MC?  If so, have you also made sure to apply to all enclosed items when doing so?

We're also on Unity, Todd, so it doesn't seem to be the fix for us.

I have applied the permissions to the folders on the Mac's harddrive, but the project, attic, and media are all on our Unity, and you can't change permissions on those networked drives.

This is really a bummer, because it has really slowed down my workflow when the system crashes once an hour.

I have tried to be more careful with certain effects. It seems that its better to delete a timewarp effect and reapply it than it is to trim a clip with a timewarp effect.

I also had a weird thing with a clip I had applied a Fit-to-Fill on. It was created fine, played fine, but after a while it suddenty became unrendered. When I tried to render it -- you guessed it -- bus error.

While you local storage guys may be happy with this software, it can be an absolute dog when you attach it to a Unity.

Yes I realize the Unity thing presents another layer off issues.  That said, it's happened to me, though not as frequently as you, and I'm running a VideoRaid.  You have Unity.  kangelis has an assortment of SATA and FW800 drives.  This error is spread across seemingly most drive configurations and  seems to be more prevelant for certain users.  One crash an hour is a serious issue.  I'm at one every week or so... sometimes two weeks.  The permissions fix really made a big difference for me.  I was at around two or three a day before I came up with that little workaround.

I agree nonetheless though.  A solution to this error needs to happen.  It arrived with 2.5 and is still here with 2.7.  It's unacceptable for us to be jiggering permissions like mad to get around touchy software.

Yes I have. I applied read/write to "Charles" which is my user account name on my Mac and I checked the option to make the change to all subfolders and files. I changed the permissions to the following folders:

    /Applications/Avid Media Composer
    /Applications/Avid Codecs LE
    /Applications/Avid Codecs PE
    /Applications/Factory Floor
    /Library/Application Support/Avid
    /Library/Application Support/Boris Presents 4.0 AVX
    /Library/Application Support/Noise Industries
    /AVID/Avid Projects
    /AVID/Avid Users
    MEDIA DRIVE/OMFI MediaFiles

I also ran Disk Utility on all my drives and everything turned up fine.

I seem to get the bus errors/crashes when I am working in a complex sequence that has lots of layerrs of overlapping clips and effects. So far I have not had a bus error/crash on any of my educational projects as they are very simple interview pacakges and nat packages.

This is very frustrating because I cannot have a producer or client sit in on a session with me. The repeated crashes would be far too embarrasing!!

Kangelis, like todd says, yo uneed to open up ALL of the permissions. Group, Owner and everyone.

You quoted my question but didn't answer it. If you are not on 2.7, you will see these bus crashes. A lot of them have been solved in the update. Especially the ones dealing wiht timewarps and 3rd party plugs.

Re: Are You Getting Bus Errors?

Talk to me about that Kevin. I worked with Avid on fixing the timewarp trim problem. I haven't been able to make my system crash in that way since the update. Same with 3rd party plugs. I had a lot of crashing during the Beta but it seems to be pretty much ironed out. I have had a crash a day but that's always while playing the timeline, not so much working with effects anymore. We're still chasing these problems.

Did you uninstall 2.6.6 prior to installing 2.7?

Yes I did open up all permissions, Growp, Owner and Everyone and set it to the name of my login account on the computer.
