VISTA: Installation for Avid when OS is Vista

    Hi all,

I just got windows vista because I went through hell trying to get a WinXp Cd.
So i have everything on my computer up and running perfectly. But when I try and Install Avid Xpress Pro HD v.5 I get a message saying wrong operating system.
What do I have to do in order to install Avid on my pc?

Thanks for you help in advance.
    -Owen

    *** EDIT ***

Lower in the threads i posted a solution and it works. If you have Vista and want to keep it, The only way to run Avid is to make a partition on your HD and install XP PRO sp2.  Its a bit annoying, and will take a little time figureing out. But as of now its the only apparent way.
     Good luck.

Load the qualified OS, which is Windows XP Professional SP2 (32-bit).  Xpress Pro is NOT supported under Vista.  And, it probably won't be for quite some time.

Tell you what, go buy a Ferrari, and when they recommend that you use unleaded and you fill the tank with Diesal and the car doesn't run... then come back and state that Ferrari's company is run like crap.

Until then.. I recommend that if you buy something that recommends specific items to run.. may I suggest you actually get those items instead of improvising with unapproved items then complaining.

Yep, Avid's been doing some stupid things lately but not moving to Vista immediately is definitely not one of them. Vista's got some massive changes under the hood that will require some big rewrites to a hardware intensive app like Avid. They have a lot of other things they need to do before they make Vista compatibility a priority.

90% of my applications that are installs for Win Xp work on VISTA.  All im saying is why do they have to make this such a hassle and why cant they be prepaird for a launch for something like VISTA.

And also Avid is a GREAT editing program, however if you read on these forums long enough you will see the amount of problems people have with the program.  And the only reason why you even know about this forum is probably because you had problems installing Avid and had to come here for help...

I have never had to visit any of my other application forums for help nor have the customer support tried to charge me rediculous FEE's for Technical Support.

Im not attempting to start a thread about bashing Avid.

I just wish life was fair.

Yep, there's a crapload of discussions of problems with Avid here on the Avid forums. Ever been to any other NLE's forums? ;)

They're not "making it a hassle", it's a crapload of work that is completely unnecessary to rush. Moving to Vista would mean forcing everyone who wants to take advantage of newer XPro versions to shift to Vista straight away, which would be a pain in the *** for their user base (no, it wouldn't be feasable to develop for both Vista and XP). It would also mean time taken up by their engineers when they have more important things to do, like fixing existing problems and delivering on very old promises.

Ok, This might be a redundant post on how to.

Have Windows Vista and Avid installed on the same computer, but ill post it for people incase they buy vista and didnt know about Avid's Xp Pro's meticulous Specs.

If you have Vista and your happy with it, so far i like it. And you want to install Avid on your computer but ( wrong operating system installed on you computer ) comes up while attempted to install.

This only works if you have a Copy of WinXP Pro Edition CD.

What you have to do is make a partition on your Hard Drive and install XP on it, then when you want to use Avid boot up in XP rather then Vista.

This is a link on how to set up the partition and install XP on a Vista OS...

I have not attempted this solve yet, bc im still in search for a Genuine Copy of XP, But when I do ill post and let you know if it worked.

    It works.

Re: VISTA: Where can I download the Vista patch so I can install Avid???

As an owner of a company with 3 avids which have paid for themselves many times over, I would not want to jump to vista anytime soon.  Do you really want to stake your business on a band new OS from Microsoft?  Until SP1 comes out, I would not want to touch Vista.  Microsoft's history of issues with products is far worse than Avid's.  While Vista has a lot of neat things about it, it is by no means a mature OS and when we make our money on our Avid's, I want them on a mature, stable platform.

Let the OS mature and let Avid test it extensively before switching.

And from someone who has built well over a hundred computers, including Vista ones this month, I can assure you that quite a few programs do not play well with Vista yet, and there needs to be a lot more hardware drivers published for it to be truly useful.

    My 2 cents.

    EDIT

As far a getting a genuine copy of XP Pro, there are a lot of websites that sell them.  www.newegg.com is one.

Microsoft are still selling XP Pro.  I bought one from my local, high-turnover office supplies store just last week.  The reason they'll continue with it?  Because, as stated above, they know that there isn't total hardware support for Vista out there yet.

It would be surprising if they didn't continue for a while anyway.  It's not so long ago that they discontinued 2000.  There was a considerable overlap with XP in that case.

I support You totaly. There is no need for upgrade to a new OS as long as Your NLE works on the existing one.
I think some of the participants on this board do not understand that Avid Xpress Pro and Media Composer is highly professional software which is made for professional work. Therefore, Avid have strict recomendation for which system will work and with which drivers and other spec. Just to guarantee, You can deliver the work to the next deadline. A premature support for Vista will break this trust.

Re: VISTA: Where can I download the Vista patch so I can install Avid???

i have seen some great benchmark test done with Vista ready pc's (whatever that means) and all show that Vista slows down a system to 30% in some cases.... compared to XP that is. So as long as not all systems are running dual core intels or quad core AMD's i 'll be happy to stay with my XP.. just like from NT to W2K and W2K to XP... all in good time.

There is some real advantage to be made when going 64 bits but until that time Vista is nothing and absolutely nothing more then a pimped ride called XP... butt ugly and extremely slow Smile

That's not true. Vista includes some huge improvements to XP under the hood such as .NET 3.0 (including WPF) and DirectX 10, but at the moment there really isn't anything taking advantage of that tech so there's not a whole lot of point in migrating. It won't be too long before we see that stuff being taken advantage of though, and then there'll be a lot of reasons to upgrade.
