how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

    Hello,

I have to export some sequences with an avid adrenaline media composer (2.1.6) in quicktime.

my sequences are mixdown in MXF MPEG 30, and there are two sets of stereo tracks ( 2 stereo for original language in A1 and A2 and two other tracks for stereo in other language in A3 and A4 )

I search someone who can explain me how to export with the 4 audio tracks

Actually i can export in stereo mix ( audio tool in stereo mix ), but there is a error message, when i try to export in direct out, explaining something like ... there isn't clip based pan ...

    but i don't want pan

i want a quicktime with one video track and 4 audio tracks

    many many thanks

    i enjoy reading your help

    Seems to be difficult

    You most likely will have to export a separate audio file with the additional 2 audio tracks;

Re: how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

Before version 7 of quicktime there was a limitation in final cut pro that you couldn't load 4 tracks of audio in final cut. With version 5 of final cut and version 7 of quicktime it is possible. So if this would work I recommend using the latest quicktime.

Well I'm not sure BUT I know that FCP5 can capture 4 channels of audio and FCP4 couldn't because of a quicktime limitation. So quicktime7 must support it in FCP. I don't know if quicktime support it as standalone app.

Re: how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

    Question should be :

which QT codec (obviously Avid compatible) will support up to 4 audio channels ?

Never heard anything about this? But I am "open" to any novelty !

Re: how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

QT can support a lot more than 4 channels (not sure how many but I think 24).  Unfortunately I don't think AVID supports exporting multiple channels to QT.

You can export a wav for each additional pair of tracks that you need, open the wav in QT, select all, copy then switch to your QT video and use the "Add to Movie" function of QT Pro to add more audio tracks to your video.

Note however that this simply "links" the wav files to the QT movie so the wav's need to stay in the same folder as the video QT.

You can do the reverse as well, using the "Extract" button to extract tracks from a QT.

From the release notes quicktime 7.1.3:

Surround sound. QuickTime Player can now play up to 24 channels of audio. With QuickTime 7, your Mac, and surround speakers, you can enjoy the full effect of your surround sound movie or game.

I acknowledge, I am not a QT expert, and these infos are interesting. But it seems Avid doesn't take part of these features. One more "request" topic.

Not true. I just saved the movie as a "self contained" QuickTime movie and deleted the source files. It played just fine. If you make a reference movie, then of course, you are correct.

bsuttie's procedure is right on. I would suggest exporting one video/audio QT with channels 1-2, then additional AIFF files for each additional stereo pair. Remember that each file should start at the same relative spot and be the same length, because then all you have to do is add the additional audio at the front of the QT and not try to line them up.

And yes, you will need QT Pro to do this.

Re: how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

Many many thanks for all your help.

    I will buy quicktime pro.

    But i've just another question.
My version of quicktime is 6.5.2 in the station where i have to do this operation ( because of the compability with my version of adrenaline ).
Do you think i have to install quicktime 7 in another computer and do the operation in another computer ( i will upgrade the avid station in the futur ), or is it possible to have two version of quicktime to have the possibility to make this?

Many many thanks one more time

Re: how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

If your MCA is earlier to 2.2.1, install (or keep) QT 6.5.2

2 Quicktime version can't be installed on the same computer.

If you would like to use QT7 and your MCA isn't compatible, yes install QT7 on an other computer.

Re: how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

Can the exported tracks be panned?   Say I want to "add to movie" in quicktime pro:

    - a mono dialog track panned left

    - a mono temp fx track panned right

    - a mono temp music track panned right

And can the person playing back the quicktime turn off or isolate the tracks they want to hear?   (Such as just dialog + music without temp fx.)

Re: how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

    only with qt_pro under movie_properties:

pan left or right or middle

and you can choose, which track you will hear.

if you stay with the settings, you can store every version as "save_as_self_contained".

Re: how exporting in Quicktime with 4 audio tracks

Once i needed to do the same thing. You will need to have QuickTimePro for my method!

What i did was: Mixdown all tracks

Then i exported a quicktime reference file (within the export setting disable the option Mixdown AudioTracks)

Open the exported .mov file with QuickTime Pro. Choose FILE -> Export. Under OPTIONS set your VideoSettings and under the AudioSettings you have the option to select 4 Real Channels!

I'm using the German QTPro Version so i hope it is actually called 4 real channels!

    Hope this helps. good luck
