Hi

I'm having trouble importing a DVCPRO HD 1080i 50 file. I set up a 1080i 50 project and import the file. No error messages occur and the file appears in my bin. When I try to play it back the sounds play but the video is just white. I followed the instructions here on the forum on setting up the Nvidia display driver.

I posted my system specs in my profile and I can add to that that I started with with the 84.26 Nvidia driver, but switched to the newer driver supplied by Avid to see if that helped (but it didn't).

I greatly appreciate any suggestions.

 

it's probably a codec that the Avid doesn't reconize.  What kind of video file is that ?  where did it come from?

I got it from another facility. They digitized it from a Panasonic DVCPRO HD player onto their FCP system. They told me that it was Quicktime DVCPRO HD.

Frequently... but not always, the problem is not using the correct QuickTime codec or version on the originating file that you are trying to import.  Start by making sure (documentation) that these things are all set correctly.

I'm not sure I got that. Do you mean that I should check the settings on my machine (I have Quicktime 7.1.3 and the relevant Avid codecs seem to be installed ver.1.30 LE), or do you mean that I should check what version of Quicktime (and what codecs) the facilty that created file uses?

you have the correct version on your machine but you should check the facility.  If they have a newer version of Quicktime it might not jive.  You may also want to have the facility download the latest codec LE package for their FCP computer and then export the movies using one of the Avid DNX codecs and give that a shot.

OK, thanks for the advice. The facility is using Quicktime 7.1.3 to, so I guess it must be a problem with some codec used by FCP. The weird thing is that FCP is supposed to work with the native Panasonic DVCPRO HD codec.

I will post something when I find out what is going on.

I haven't researched this, but is it possible that FCP is transcoding the original footage to a more convenient codec for it to use?  It sounds consistent with the symptoms that you're seeing.

I'm having a similar problem with a 720p60 Quicktime file I got from a FCP guy.  It just imports as four minutes of white blankness, with sound.  If you check out the the QT file's properties (Window>Show Movie Inspector), it tells me that it is indeed DVCPRO HD, which I think AXP should be able to understand (this is the native codec used by Panasonic P2 cameras like the HVX200, and I'm able to import MXF files from P2 cards with no problem...)

I'm not currently on my editing machine so I can't provide detailed specs, but I know I'm running AXP version 5.7 if that's any help... with whatever version of Quicktime the version matrix recommended.

From what I hear, the DVCPRO codec is not normally supported by Quicktime, but FCP is supposed to provide the codec support (if you're into that sort of thing).  But I would think that, since AXP can import P2 media, it should also provide DVCPRO support generally.  But maybe not?

Some of Apple's codec is not available on the PC. This includes DVC Pro HD, uncompressed and ProRes. You will need to convert those files in a Mac first before importing.

Yes Avid supports DVC Pro HD natively but without the codec of the movie it will be unable to understand it.

Another option is to convert the DVCPro HD files in Raylight.

It's too bad that a third party transcoder app is needed (and an extra level of encoding!)  I've poked around on the Panasonic website, but can't find anything useful.  DVCPRO is a Panasonic codec, right?  I would think they would want to let us PC people work with it more easily.  Or is Apple making some special flavor of DVCPRO just for Quicktimes produced by FCP?  (on a side note, my Mac laptop can't understand this DVCPRO Quicktime either, and I'm guessing that's because I don't have FCP...)

There is apparently something that Apple does with the QT header that doesn't allow PC versions of QT to read these files as saved by FCP.  I don't have details.  Just a small thought, though.  Have you tried QT Alternative?

Install it on a non-NLE system, because it will blow away any existing QT install.  You'll also need to install the Panasonic codecs, but if you can read it there you should be able to convert it to something Avid can understand.
