    Audio Capture Problem

I am trying to capture material from a VHS deck routed through a DSR-45, connected to the Mojo via firewire (i.e. using the DSR-45 as a TBC). Previously this has worked fine; apart from the known problem of not being able to monitor the sound as it goes in, it would capture and play back fine. However, since the 5.6.1 upgrade I have been unable to do this - the picture will go through perfectly, but it captures with no audio. The sound is definitely getting to the DSR-45 okay, it just isn't coming out again. DV Cam material captures without problems.

I have just upgraded to 5.6.2 and the problem is still there. I'm on OS 10.4.8 (which I know isn't officially supported yet) and QT 7.1.3. (Dual 2.5GHz G5, 2GB RAM)

Any ideas?! I have tried bypassing the Mojo but the problem remains. My current workaround is to digitise into FCP and then import into Avid, but obviously that's not a long term solution!

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

You could record to the DV deck and digitize from there, but that's probably not what you want to hear. Do you have DV EE on in the DSR-45 menu? Does hitting the Record button on the DSR-45 make any difference?

Yes, EE is on, no pressing Record makes no difference...

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

What about actually recording to tape when you try to capture?
Get a piece of scratch DV tape, start the dub, and then capture?
Not sure why this would've stopped working.

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

Something definitely changed to audio capture via firewire between v5.5.3 and v5.6.

I had been successfully capturing from DVD using a Pioneer DVR-310s with firewire I/O, and since v5.6 the video comes through but the audio does not. Audio captures fine from the Mojo's analog inputs. I've reproduced this problem on both the Mac and Windows platforms.

Can anyone at Avid address what has happened?

Once again, This is a User forum, Avid does not participate here unless a Moderator feels that it is necessary and requests that they take a look at a thread.

You are correct, there has been a change in the new version. Avid is aware of it and is looking into what changed.

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

The capture problem still persists with v5.6.3.

I've isolated the problem to capturing through a DV transcoder:

If I capture directly from a DVCAM tape (using a Sony DSR-1800 in my case) with firewire deck control, the audio (and video) capture OK.

If I try to capture analog AV using the same DV deck serving as a A/D converter, with either serial control or no deck control, the audio and video selectors turn off automatically in the capture tool, with no error message, even though the signals come through fine to the DV deck.

When capturing non-copy protected DVDs through firewire from a Pioneer 310, video comes through, but audio still does not since 5.6.

I've been capturing analog media this way for years and it has never been a problem until v5.6.

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

Can confirm that I am also still having this problem in 5.6.3.

This is on the bug list guys but, sorry to say, it's not very high on the list. Once the workflow killers have been nailed, bugs like this will get into the pipeline.

Just bumping this for the sake of emphasising how ruddy annoying it is at the moment for anyone working on an archive show where all the archive for the offline comes in on BITC VHS.

    Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

I have sent yet another escalation to both the support people and to the engineers working on the next release. Just to keep it on the radar.

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

Wanted to update you on the status of this bug. It's been moved up the ladder and Avid is trying to squash it for an upcoming release. I have confirmed with engineering that they are working it into the system.

To be perfectly honest, it's a high priority bug but not the top of the list. The top of the list is critical and under that is important. This bug has been termed important. They tell me that they are going to do all they can to get it fixed ASAP.
