Problems converting 23.98 program to 29.97

I have a program that was cut in 23.98 (1080p) and am being asked to deliver a 29.97 (1080p, *not i*) master. My current workflow is to mixdown the 23.98 sequence, open that bin in a 1080i/59.94 project and lay it into a new sequence, then export it at 1080p/29.97.

The problem is, I've tried virtually every combination of Motion Effect setting (frame interpolation, output, etc.), and even tried several different export settings, but I either get duplicated frames (leading to a 'stutter') or I get blended frames on cuts. I've even tried using Adobe's Media Encoder in various ways to try and get things to look right, but nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really at a loss.

Have you tried not mixing the sequence down but directly opening it in a 29.97p (or 59.94i) project? This way the frame change is done on a shot by shot case.

If you are trying to deliver a progressive output, you DON'T want that conversion project to be 1080i59.94 -- you want to be in a 1080/29.97p project.

Historically, there are only two main ways to get 23.98 to 29.97 in ANY system. They are (1) 80% timewarp and (2) add pulldown.

Adding pulldown expects the result to be interlaced, so your only option if you want progressive is to do the timewarp, which will, by it's very nature, duplicate frames. Since you are in a progressive to progressive conversion now, the differing Timewarp Interpolations in the Motion Effect editor won't be of much use, but you likely will want to stay away from anything "Blended." You can try using the Fluid Motion setting on bits that are strobbing the most (adding edits to the clip so you can vary the Interpolation settings) but my bet is you'll find the overall best result is leaving the "Type" setting to Both Fields (even though it's not really working from "Fields").

    Good luck,

    Jason

As a footnote -- and if you are a glutten for punishment -- you could stay in the 1080i/59.94 project and add pulldown to create an interlaced version (I "think" the pulldown feature is only available in Symphony mode 'tho), then de-interlace the result using interpolation (with the goal being to avoiding interpolating the whole-frame material only the pulled-down extra frames).

If you don't have the Symphony option, you can add pulldown using After Effects or similar.

But again, this is a crazy-sauce approach for minimal (if any) gains.

Re: Problems converting 23.98 program to 29.97

Thank you both for your help. After a lot of testing, I came to both of these conclusions yesterday. I was stuck on the process for getting a 30i version, that I overlooked the obvious solutions. I am not opening up the cut sequence in a 60p project which seems to be the solution.

    Thanks again,

    Guy

Wait, you're trying to get to 60P? Or are you saying you are "not" opening it up in 60P?

Although the timewarp conversion still applys, that's a BIG slowdown which will result in more than double duplicate frames.

If you are, from my perspective that's crazy unorthodox -- are you certiain you need to deliver 60P?
