    MC 2019 Bins & Layouts & Containers

I've been trying, but I really just don't understand what is going on here. Maybe its bugs, maybe its me - buts its frustrating as heck.

I bounce between multiple projects daily. I also have a host of FX / SFX / CC fx that I like to use. Those are in their owns bins in my "favorites" bin. In the older MC - I used to be able to have those bins tabbed and open, tucked away next to my timeline all the time. Every project like this. Convenience.

I tried to doing this now and it just doesnt work. I've tried top tabbing them into a bin container and saving the workspace, I've tried side  tabbing them as seperate bin containers and saving a bin layout. I've tried every conceivable option I can think of - and every single time I bounce to a different project they are all in individual bin containers sitting on top of one another and I have to manually put them back together.

This leads me to today. Updated to 2019.7 (hoping the windows minimize app bug would be fixed - it wasnt) Project is a multi day festival with lots of different events. OK - let me try creating a bin container with 6 side tabs for each event. In those side tabs I've got top tabs of different bins with different cameras.  I save the bin layout. Work a bit, then switch to a different project and all the side tabs are now showing up in the different project and docked to the side - but they're empty. If i close them and go back to my festival project then all the side tabs are now floating bin containers sitting on top of each other.

Ive wasted more time to trying to wrap my head around this than I'd care to admit. I must be doing something very very wrong or not understanding this concept at all.

Re: MC 2019 Bins & Layouts & Containers

2019.6 and 2019.7 defintely have some quirks. First and foremost, the workspaces are static between projects. So if you make a change to a workspace in one project, it will change for other projects.

If you change the number of bins in a bin container, this will be reflected in the other projects. For example, you layout the edit workspace to have a single bin container and place 1 bin in that container. Now you go to another project. That layout should be relflected in the second project. And in that project you add a second bin and populate it, and place that bin in the same bin container. Now go back to the first project. It will have 2 bins in the bin container; the original one plus an empty second one. If you remove the empty bin bin in that project and then go to the second project, you'll probably have a floating bin.

I’m wondering: What’s the easy way to deal with it?

Do you make & Save differently-named Bin Layouts per Project?

Do you Duplicate and customize Workspaces per Project?

If you were to simply use separate USER Setting per Project, would that be an easy fix?

I will monitor the responses to this post with much interest. Best wishes for a solution - short term and long term.

Re: MC 2019 Bins & Layouts & Containers

It seems that bin layouts are project specific and don't carry over from project to project. Thats what was so confusing with the docked bins from project A showing up in project B. Because I have created bin layouts in other projects and havent seen them carry over

From some more playing around, it does seem that this is happening with docked bin windows and not floating bin windows.

I work thru about 15-20 projects a year, duplicating workspaces and user settings per project would become nightmarish.

I never used Tabbed bins until v2019.6.  I don’t really understand your comment.

For my own part, I realized it was up to me to Name then Save my Bin Layout and I also figured I should Save Current Bin Layout prior to doing a Save Current on a newly modified Workspace... prior to switching to another Workspace. My custom workspace > properties tab allowed citing my custom Bin Layout.

I feel obligated to ask: did you create a Brand New User Setting? That seems important.

Also Did you Create and Save differently-named Bin Layouts per Project? I’m not at all sure it’s required, but why not?

Regarding your upper Tabbed bin— perhaps you need to save a bin with an amount of Tabs greater than any amount you would find in another Project ?

Tbe other thing I’m wondering is why are we given the opportunity to Name a Bin Container? Would it make a difference if both your projects upper Tabbed Bins used similar (or dissimilar) Names?

(if as a test, you took the trouble to set up two brand new v2019.6/7 Projects, using the same “bin amounts” in your current , and then swapped between them... would you see the same issue you’ve described? I am just looking for anything that might account for the bin-behavior you described.)

But to get real answers ASAP, If I were you, I’d take what you’ve written and seek help from Tech Support, the regular Avid folks who pitch in here on the forums, perhaps even on the Avid Facebook group. It’s just a matter of finding out the best-practices.

In my opinion to address this Avid should introduce a basic computing concept that has been around for at least 3 decades.   "Save Project as template."  Open Template, "Save as" (new name).   (Edit Geek's standalone Avid Templater program is only a little over 8 mb's)

Decently implemented those 3 commands would make at least 60% of MC users happy whilst speeding up virtually every project for them.  If introducing templates seems to time consuming / complicated for the development team they could easily invite the folk over at Pro Tools to help. That Avid program comes standard with some super complex session templates.

Re: MC 2019 Bins & Layouts & Containers

I actually do use the Avid Templater program - I have adjusted my base template project for 2019, but to be honest with you - none of my current projects have been created since the implementation of 2019. Maybe going forward this wont be an issue once I start cycling out older projects.

    Telegram!

You're absolutely right - tech support is next on my list, I just didnt think it could be/should be this hard to have bins open in projects the way you left them.

I dont switch workspaces - I only work off of the Edit workspace (and use keyboard commands to bring up the tools I need), and up until this mess I've created for myself, I never used 'bin layouts'.

New user settings were created for 2019.6 when I first installed the update

New bin layouts were also created for each project, mainly because if I created a bin layout in project A, it didnt show up as an option in project B.

Naming the bin container actually is a nice feature. I was able to seperate a group of tabbed bins in a bin container (i.e. Day 1 - Cam A, B, C, etc...). Then I can side tab that bin container (named 'Day 1') with another bin container ('Day 2') and bounce back and forth between bins for Day 1 and Day 2

Re: MC 2019 Bins & Layouts & Containers

It sounds like you are doing everything right. I look forward to any follow-up you may give once you get the official how-to on swapping Projects without “losing your place” all sorted out.

Are your Upper Tabbed Bins all consistently named from Project to Project? Like you said: FX, CC, etc?

Perhaps it all boils down to “staging” an older project’s Bins once (at first opening in new 2019.7) then saving in a Bin Layout, Saving it’s Workspace, and simply dealing with random stray bins thereafter. Or Floating, not docking, as you said. I wish you success.

Since you only use 1 workspace— which is very zen— I would encourage you to at least try duplicating Edit WS at least once, to see if using that in a second project does the trick. It’s rather easy to do either from the Workspace Sidebar or directly from Settings/User/Workspaces. (Righ-click) duplicate/rename.

Re: MC 2019 Bins & Layouts & Containers

I have found the custom bin layouts to be almost more trouble than they are worth in the current configuration. I find I can "break" the custom Bin Layout when I switch to Color Correction mode. It will move bins all around and then I have to reload my Bin Layout to get it back where I want it after I select my Edit workspace. It seems too bad that switching to other modes moves your bins around. It is also disappointing you have to rebuild your Bin Layout with ever single project. Your Favorite Bins follow you around, but not how you have them organzied. Surely, the Favorites should be "locked" to your user, right?
