Relinking to new media with extra audio tracks

    Hi

I have edited some sequences with a .mov file with 2 audio tracks.

Now I have been sent the same files in a different format (.mxf) with extra audio tracks (all in a single file with the video) which contain sound I will need.

The first 2 audio tracks match the original file as does the timecode and durations.

I can't find a way to let the sequences relink to this new media, is it possible if the new file now has 16 audio tracks compared to the original file which only had 2 ?

I have tried renaming the new files so they are identical to the originals but no joy.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Relinking to new media with extra audio tracks

I gave this a try and relinked by file name (ignoring extension) and it worked but it did not link to the additional audio tracks. I used the relink method where you relink to selected media in open bins (so I created two bins - one with the MOV files and one with the MXF files and I just selected the MXF files and the sequence and then performed the relink).

The only way I could then get the additional audio tracks on the timeline was to locate the (now relinked source) for each clip in the relinked sequence and replace it with the new source. Very tedious. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer for you.

    Thank you for your reply.

I tried that method but still didn't get as far as you. Copied the file name from the original and pasted to the new so they are identical apart from file extension.

Told relink to link to different target and use file name and ignore extension etc but still not able to link at all.

I did put the new file in a new bin as well ?

Re: Relinking to new media with extra audio tracks

What relinking method did you use? Did you use the 'Selected items in all open bins...' option? I'm assuming all media is linked via AMA, correct?

Sorry I can't be of any help here. Hopefully someone else will chime in...

Yes all AMA linked and ticked Selected Items in open bins.

IF you Clip/Modified the original 2-audio mov clip to add the same number of audio tracks on the new .mxf, would it then Relink, I wonder?

That's an interesting idea... I'll give it a try.

edit - Yes it worked but it probably doesn't help the OP because the editing was already performed (there would be quite a bit of manual effort, I suppose).

    good to know...

now OP should be able to jump from edit to edit, hitting matchrame, to access tracks above 1&2 loaded in SRC monitor.

Re: Relinking to new media with extra audio tracks

I've said this before but avid should really allow manual relinking to files.

The relink method is a mess.  Somtimes one just wants to SIMPLY point media composer to the correct files.

I saw you asked for manual Relink here:

I’m just wondering, did you ever try copy/pasting the original mixdown’s (randomly-generated alpha numeric).mxf file name?

Maybe that would have worked? And yes, we all like simple solutions...
