I am not sure if it is me, my machine, Avid getting too complex or the increasing moves from MSFT to turn Windows into a total consumer OS - but editing on Avid is becoming increasingly less stable - with more and more crashes.
Windows runs a lot of services now to keep the start bar updated with real time events etc. it keeps network connections open etc. it auto updates things that can impact on the compatbility and even Avid application manager takes up resources like memory etc.
Background rendering is a pleasure when it works but it takes up a lot of resources and and is very hit and miss. And it breaks often.
Boris red plugin makes Avid very unstable once it has been used - quirky things happen - timeline montor doesnt update etc.
Whatever it is - the editing experience is not that great anymore and I keep updating to new versions of MC in the hope that things wil get better - but things appear to be getting slower, less stable and more frustrating (or is this just me?)
I wonder if Avid MC for Linux would be a better experience - Linux is a rock solid realible OS that is efficient in managing resources - it doesnt have ongoing consumerisation updates and would perhaps be a better suited operating system to windows 10 for a large and complex resource intensive application like Avid MC.
Windows 10 is trying to become an app oriented OS for tablets and internet connected apps - they are tryting to abstract all the technical capabilities away from the user and also takes up valuable resources from the OS to manage other utilities.
Linux on the other hand is becoming more pervasiveand less daunting to the average user and offers many different distro's - Avid could choose one that would be optimised to MC.
Dual boot machines are also much easier to manage and implement and second screen capabilities (phones) mean you don't need to use your editing work stations for other activities - I often reach for my phone now to read mail, search the web or do other things - instead of opening these applications on the editing workstation - so single purpose workstations are not a problem anymore.
Anyway this is my view - I think we need a reliable but invisible OS to efficiently run MC rather than trying to make it work on an OS that is moving away from a stable base to run big client based applications.

I think it might be just you, and I don't mean that in a snarky way. There are always going to be people (not you, particularly, Neil) who have issues with whatever OS they're running. You see similar posts on the Mac forum and in Avid Facebook groups. I don't think these posts point toward a larger problem with Windows or iOS and Media Composer.

Linux comes up every few years. I don't things have changed much since the last time:

No snarky offence taken
Indeed it could be just me - I have been a Windows supporter for a long time and have only run Windows since 3.1 - so no issues with Windows per se - was just saying that I see Windows moving in a different direction to what it was previously - i.e. the go to platfrom for running heavy client side applications
Microsoft is reinveted and is doing wonders with Azure and in moving compute load to the cloud and for the majority of applications this works - I am not sure how far we we are from moving editing and rendering loads to the cloud - but I suspect it is not imminent.
Bu their own admssion Windows is not the only favourite child - and PC's are becoming less prevalent and more specialised so the builk consumer sales are no longer as profitable as they have been in the past.
So as we stand are the various strategies of Avid and Microsoft aligned? - i.e. in terms of providing an OS optimised for heavy client side processing.
Anyway not a train smash - I was just wondering -
BTW with many years experience - I do run a very clean instance of Windows 10 professional for editing and yet I do think that things havent gotten more stable - granted this is a control group of 1 - but it feels like I have more issues now than before.
Maybe I am getting old and am in the good old days phase of my life!
Anyway happy holidays everyone !
Win 10 wit MC 2018.11 works better than any version before here.
Rock solid.

I could have written most of this post myself...I just moved away from a 6 years old Win7 workstation (used to be on MC 5.x to 7.x supported laptops) to a currently supported laptop in the hope of getting a more stable platform...and the first days/weeks have been simply a nightmare: MC crashes every other minute or so without apparent reason or correlation with any action. Using a french saying: I had the impression to jump from the frying pan into the fire - I was nearly to the point to revert to my old Win7 machine and resell the new one ! Interestingly, the frequency of MC crashes has seriously dropped since (no reason either), so I suspect something like background processes (perhaps lots of silent Windows updates, AV scans, silent driver updates, etc. during the first hours/days of activity on this pristine laptop) may have interfered with MC. Despite being an old Windows fan for professional reasons, I started hating MS' strategy when they moved their OS in the Software as a Service world: you can never trust that a silent update (that you simply can't dismiss - and just hardly control) won't break something at some point, and hence you find yourself trying to t'shoot new bugs on a system that was quite stable the day before [:'(]
Windows 10 is the best that have happen.
Windows 10 has been rock solid for me. I see less crashes now than 10 years ago.

I run Win10 on the MC machines, and Linux for everything else. The Win10/MC combo is very stable here, but I do have concerns with privacy, autoupdates, background (undisclosed) activities, and the resources required to run the OS and the apps. On the other hand Linux does not collect information on what I do, type, tell, etc, it doesn't push updates, it does not display ads, it does not embed a shopping centre, and requires a fraction of the computing power to efficiently run complex apps. As a matter of facts I'm looking at the Lightworks and Resolve because of their Linux support, I run them both on dismissed/obsolete MC machines and they perform surprisingly well, I wonder how they'd work on current workstation... Given the OSX "legacy codecs" crusade for a ProRes only world, which I fear is going to affect the PC as well, and the Windows very consumer attitude, I dream of MC on Linux.

In Windows Settings/ privacy there are many options to reduce the intrusiveness that some professionals find annoying. It takes some time to fully locate all these settings, but they are there.
In this world of hacking cat and mouse, ever present patches are a part of life. I do find a properly lean Windows 10 and 7 pro amazingly stable.
The Open Source linux world sometimes appears like watching someone herd cats.

i could get a box full of hardware, put it together, install windows and media composer and have a 100% stable media composer workstation in less than 3 hours. if youre having stability problems its your lack of technical expertise.
sorry
I wrote it before, I state it again: no issues with stability here, plenty of concerns with data collection about my activities, being unable to update at my own will, advertisments, embedded shops, resource hungry useless flashy bells and whistles. No need to post arrogant stuff cls105, and please note that the lack of technical expertise belongs to the average Mac and Windows user, who stays well away from Linux because "it's not as easy". And thank You TVJohn, but too many privacy settings are undocumented, hidden, or simply not available, the feeling being that MS is in control, not me. Add to this that I can gracefully run Linux and an NLE, Blender, the GIMP, LibreOffice, or You name it, on a CoreDuo, 8 GB RAM, mechanical HD system, that is painfully slow with Windows 7 instead.
luca.mg:plenty of concerns with data collection about my activities, being unable to update at my own will, advertisments, embedded shops, resource hungry useless flashy bells and whistles.
I've been advising people who run Win 10 to install 'O&O Shutup10' which will stop all these data collecting processes and prevent automatic updates.
O&O didn't work nicely on my system, too aggressive, to the point that the OS was handycapped, so to speak. On top of that the Windows updates reverted the changes, and changed the way some settings were managed: MS does not want You to tinker with "their" software, One more reason to switch to Linux!
It's true that O&O can stop services like Cortana from working with it's default settings, because Cortana functions by collecting personal information. However, it is fully customisable (with restore points), so you can try and test out various settings without danger.
It's also the case that some MS updates may 'switch back-on' some of the settings, but you can set O&O to check on start-up, so that it will re-apply any settings. It's also prudent to make sure you've got the latest O&O version installed, to allow for OS changes.
I can't see a scenario where Avid will ever produce a Linux version. They've got their hands full with the Windows and Mac OS changes causing MC to grind to a halt!

-> i can unpack an AVID supported laptop, configure windows and media composer and get a crash in less than 3 hours.
...
Believe it or not, while I consider myself now a mere "computer user", I worked many years in the IT industry with quite some computer expertise, and Windows in particular since version 2.0!
I'm frequently confronted with unexpected problems, and those for which I take the time to setup a repro scenario are generally confirmed as bugs, issues or 'by design', but not 'user errors' - this is not just for MC, but also other pieces of software or drivers. I'm so good at bumping against strange bugs that if I had to start all over again, I would redo my carreer as testing engineer !
PS: don't consider this as an insult to Avid engineers, but a critical look at my way of surviving in the modern software era ...
