What are your favorite anti-virus softwares?

My Kaspersky license is about to expire.  In addition to editing, I'm also building a website that connects voters and politicians without advertising dollars getting in the way (VoteWise.net).  I am a little leary of having a Russian anti-virus software on the computer that I'm doing my elections coding on.  Does anyone have experience with really good non-Russian anti-virus softwares that won't interfere with Avid?

    Thanks.

I have several systems. 1-Media Composer ver 7 1-Media Composer 8.8.4 1-mac Express 2.2 AB/VB Targa set up The computers I use include: 1-Intel core i7... [view my complete system specs]

Re: What are your favorite anti-virus softwares?

The question is no longer how well they work, but rather do you trust them. Installing antivirus software is like giving them the keys to your house. Microsoft antivirus (Defender or Essentials) is the best practicle solution, and yes, Microsoft already has the keys to your house.

Re: What are your favorite anti-virus softwares?

I used to have Bitdefender on my Windows 7 partition but I've removed it. I was intenting to replace it but I left it with Windows Defender and I don't really see the need for installing anything else. If I was going to install a virus scanner it would probably be Webroot.

The difference between Defender on Windows 7 and 10 is that on Windows 10 you can right-click a file and scan it but that context menu isn't available for Windows 7. Sometimes, I will run Trend Micro's HouseCall on my drives which is a free online scanner just to get a second opinion.

I also use virtual machines via VirtualBox, so if you want to be ultra-safe online, you can always go down that route. I've used VM's to test out small applications, especially when you're hunting for or trying out software because that's when you're most likely to execute something you shouldn't and end up with a problem. I have images of clean Windows 7 and 10 which I can put on my test partition, so I can test applications to investigate if some other software or OS patch is causing an issue.

Once I move over to Windows 10, I reckon I'd stick with Windows Defender. You can use other on-demand scanners that are free - you have to pay for real-time monitoring on these.

Re: What are your favorite anti-virus softwares?

I'm running win7x64 and apart from MSE i have no anti-virus - but do observe a strict anti-virus policy on the Avid workstation - no browsing (other than Avid and MS updates), no email and no opening unknown files on this platform - I have run this policy since 2000, when we editied on Liquid Silver, which objected strongly to any AV software on the NLE platform - and have follwoed it since, without problems. :)
