    Closed Captioning MC 2018.10 advice

    Hi there:

Trying to get familiar with importing/exporting QT with embedded Close Captioning.  Tested import of .scc file, imported into 29.97 project.  I can lay the CC file on the Data track, but when I turn on 'Show Captions' in the Viewer window, nothing shows up.  And the .scc file seems 'empty' when viewed in the timeline, yet I know there is data there.

Any words of advice?  Or links to detailed info re process?  Would be much appreciated.

    Best, JIM.

    Hi Jim,

As far as I know Avid has never imported or exported CC's in MOV.

I did a quick test on 2018.9 / Sierra importing an .scc in a 1080i/59 project and it did display in the Source and Record monitors. The track data is also displayed in the timeline when expanded. I did have to import using the Source Browser as the Drag and Drop import always failed with SYS_ERROR.

    Hi Don:

Thanks for the test and info.  I'll try the same test in a 1080i/59 project, instead of the 29.97.

I'll have to get my hands on the broadcaster delivery specs, as you suggested.  I'm also wondering, is there a better format for CC other than .scc?  I've read about a host of others.  Ideally, I'm looking for a format that would serve the most channels – ie. not just broadcast, but VOD/iTunes/Netflix, etc.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Best, JIM.

Just did the 1080i/59 test.  No different than the 29.97 project.  Still no captions displayed in the Viewers.

Checked the settings, couldn't find anything that looked like it would help.

Re: Closed Captioning MC 2018.10 advice

Have you viewed the scc with Textedit, seeing the timecode and hex caption data?

When you load the imported Master Clip in the Source Monitor for the first time do you get the "Converting 436M ANC Closed Caption Data..." window?

I don't have 2018.10 on Mac OS but I do have it on Win 10. I imported scc in 1080i/59, 1080p/29.97, 720p/29.97 and 30i NTSC. They all worked. What are the full details of your 29.97 project?

    Hi Don:

Yes, I see the hex data:

    Scenarist_SCC V1.0

    00:00:05:08 496e f1d3 e3f2 e962 e520 f7ef f26b 7320 ef6e 20cd 61e3 20ef f220 57e9 6e64 eff7 73ae

But I don't get the 'Converting 436M...' window.  When I use Source Browser to import the file, all I see is the Timecode window dialog box.

The .scc file is just a test file I found on the net, so maybe that's the issue.  You don't happen to have a file I could test with?

Sure. This short test should work. Rename the file .scc.

    Good luck! Don

    Hi Don:

Yup, that file works fine.  (not sure what was up with the test files I downloaded). And the clip in the Data track showed the graphic layout, etc.

Thanks again for all your help.  I still have to figure out best practices, and outputs, etc.  But at least I can test properly now.
