Hi guys
As a professional editor im used to work on Avid almost everyday but never from home always on client station.I decided to install Avid on my pc to have a bit of fun and its hell.First my specIntel core i5 6600 3.3/16 go ram/Geforce gtx 960 2go/windows 7/ Seagate 2to 7200 on usb3/ (only one screen)
Im not an expert but i thought it was enought to work on dnxhd 120.
I can't even play a footage in XDCAM HD 50 even with it lagging in 2 seconds !!! I did try to put the best performance settings on my timeline but it change nothing. I even put my project in SD and i still cant play any footage in avid whitout lag.
Beside playing import and export work perfectly and are pretty fast !
Im so used to work on pro station with dedicated staff for support that i might forget something but i really don't know what ?
Sorry for my broken english im from France.
Thank you guys Vincent
1) I hope you are not trying to edit AMA and xdcam codecs...
2) Do a speed test on your usb drive using blackmagic speed test.
3) If i were you I would start all over. AMA and check native resolution and native fps and transcode to dnxhr_lb.
Or ama transcode to same fps and a lower resolution to dnxhr_lb (project resolution).
4) Stop using windows 7.. its almost 10 years old.
I always see people on old software having issues. It makes sense, they are afraid to upgrade for so long, havent learned new things with software, and therefore not good at troubleshooting.
This is for everybody: upgrading and using new software is healthy for the mind.. you learn new things everyday, problem solving etc.
1) Im not editing AMA clips.
2) I tested my hard drive 210 Mbit reading and writing.
3) I transcode in dnxhd 120 first but it was lagging so i thought ill try hdcamhd50. I just tried again to transcode some footage in dnx120 and its same problem.
What is strange is that the transcode is working quite fast (1 minutes footage transcode in 1 minute) but playing one second of footage (dnxhd120) make lag everithing.
Can there be some problem with my graphic card ?

yeah, keep those muscles flexing, and the hair on your head...
the time you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted time...
Any other idea beyond the windows 7 posing problem ??
Does the video card have at least 2gigs memory?
Using MC 23.12. Win 22H2 Avid FX6.4, Vegas Pro 20/ DVD Architect 6pro, DVDit6.4proHD, CCE Basic, TmpGe Express4, TmpGe Authoring Works 4, DVDLab-Studio. Sony EX-1R, Canon XH-A1, GL2, GL1, Canon EOS 60D
Well, stuff like this happens.
i wouldn't blame windows 7 per se. i still use it a lot. don't see a reason to upgrade existing installations.
XDCAM should work work well enough even with ama.
i'd check cpu utilization in task manager during plyback.
disconnect all unneeded drives. everything that has a drive letter but isn't the system drive needs to go.
play media from internal drive for testing.
i've seen usb connected SD cards cause this behaviour.
i've seen bad sata drivers or drives cause this behaviour.
GPU driver doesn't seem likely but is probably also possible.
Looking at the console won't hurt.
i think it's likely that this problem is solvable.

I have a Geforce gtx 960 2go. I think its enough to work with dnxhd120 is in't ?

There are no other drive connected
I imported a footage on my internal drive and its the same problem.
The cpu utilization jump to 100% when playing a footage in avid but only 25% when i open a same as source export in quicktime.
I don't know what to conclude ?
Where can i check or updates my sata drivers ??
I would ceck with the activity monitor the performances of the external hard drive when play, or make a try with another disk. I had a similar problem with a Seagate hard drive, it's activity go at 100% without reading or writing any think for many seconds almost every time the system call him.

hmm, tricky.
you don't have to check or change sata drivers. you have the problem via USB and sata, so that's not it.
Playing the same fooratge in avid or quicktime doesn't tell you anything. Play it in VLC and you get other numbers still.
i'm sure the problem won't go away, but transcode a short clip to dnxhd just to make sure.
when the system usage goes to 100% it's actually the avid application that hits 100%?
hmm
i'd look at display next.
I guess you don't have any hardware output card installed? they can cause this too.
click on the video window and select "hide video". avid still decodes then but i guess the gpu has less of a chance to cause a problem.
If you have a new video driver now, try an old one, if you have an old one try a new one.
uninstalling and re-installing avid might also be a good idea.
then some more swearing at the screen, then installing windows on a new drive.
