    2018.8 waveforms painfully slow

Beginning with 2018.3 (the first 2018.x version I used) I've noticed the waveforms have gotten much much slower.

I mostly work without waveforms, but frequently engage the "show marked waveforms" to look at specific zones.  In previous versions of Avid if I accidentally turned on waveforms with a large selection, it would slow down the system, but I could quickly hit my hotkey and turn them off.

Beginning with 2018.3 I found I often could not turn of the waveforms – I often had to hit my hotkey twice.  The waveforms were also delayed – instead of drawing them one by one it seems like avid is buffering or something (I don't know) but I often feel like I do not have waveforms on but then realize that I do, but Avid is waiting (?) until it has more to show me perhaps?

Anyway, this was annoying but manageable.  Enter 2018.8 and the "live timeline".  This is almost unusable for me so far.  If I happen to accidentally select a large chunk (say 30 mins) and turn waveforms on, I might have to wait 30 seconds before I  can turn it off.  If I happen to hit play then it's game over - Live Timeline takes over most of the CPU and the waveform draw routing takes over the west and the Avid is essentially crashed (but playing).  I can wait for the sequence to end, or maybe gain control in a few minutes, or just force quit.

    Unacceptable.

Avid, please fix your waveform problem.

Have you adjusted your Media Cache > Audio settings? Does increasing the limit improve anything?

Have you tried flushing the cache?

    Re: 2018.8 waveforms painfully slow

I have it set to 993MB, but it never seems to allocate more than 50MB (I think).  I've downgraded back to 2018.5 and although I still feel that waveforms have gotten slower and the hotkey doesn't work 100% of the time, it is much much much better than 2018.8.

The live timeline seems to be the main issue.

    Re: 2018.8 waveforms painfully slow

Noticing the very same here. I was on 2018.5 before and tried upgrading yesterday to see if it got better, and it actually got worse! The feature I'm in the middle of has become almost unusable as a result of waveform slow down, and it's already split out into less than 18 minute long reels, so I'm not really even pushing it to load up an hour and half of waveforms. Tried deleting my waveform cache but haven't had much luck. About to roll back myself!

Count me in for updates on this!

    Re: 2018.8 waveforms painfully slow

    Marianna,

because I don't own the license to this Avid, when you asked for the system ID the owner of the company I'm working at started getting the emails instead (or in addtion?) to me.   I feel like I responded, but honestly I'm too busy to jump through hoops of logging in and out of various accounts.  It feels overly complex.   I think I was clear about the main issue with the "live timeline" and I've reverted to an older version, so currentlly I have very little issue with waveforms.

In answer to the questions Tudor posed:

Can you please let us know what exact storage is being used?

OWC Thunbdery bay 4 (thunderbolt 3)

Are the files in your sequence imported or AMA-linked?

Transcoded to DNx36 and maybe some DNxLB.  Maybe some imported files.  But no linked files.

What was the last version of Media Composer that worked as expected for you?

2018.5, but I would say general waveform responsiveness shifted with the 2018 versions.  2018.5 is as fast as expected, but still seems to sometimes not engage or something?  That is to say, when it draws waveforms it is what I consider "normal Avid" speed, but sometimes it seems like it doesn't draw them and I have to toggle the waveform function.  Unclear to me if this is a bug (it is not engaging) or if I am just not waiting long enough (it is not drawing the waveforms but maybe waiting to buffer more first???).  Usually toggling on/off/on gets it to work fine. Again, the real issue is with the live-timeline in 2018.8 I use "show marked" waveforms, if that matters. thanks, Ben

    Re: 2018.8 waveforms painfully slow

    Thanks, Marianna!

In case it helps: here are the details of my system. I'm re-installing 2018.3 now, so I'll hopefully be back up to speed until a fix is found!

Can you please let us know what exact storage is being used?

    Areca 8050 - Thunderbolt 1 8-bay RAID

Are the files in your sequence imported or AMA-linked?

    Sequence is entirely DNx36.

What was the last version of Media Composer that worked as expected for you?

2018.3 seemed to have better performance to me, but to be honest I think I skipped from 2018.3 to 2018.8, so I'm not sure that'll be of much use to you!

I'm having similar issues on Mac Pro Trash Can 10.12.6 2018.8 using ISIS 4.7.11.

Im also getting the freezing issue while the timeline still plays.

    Any updates

    Re: 2018.8 waveforms painfully slow

    Hi.

Same here on a Macbook Pro 2016/10.13.6/2018.8 with Promise R4 and 5K LG moitor connected. With my projectfiles on the external drive, i tried two, it was impossible to work (spinning balls al the time). I created a new local avid project and now is workable, but still working with waveform is anoying and timeconsuming. Increasing the waveform cache size felt like making the system even more sluggish. All media is imported, no AMA.

I ceated a local project after searching for the spinning balls problem and finding this conversation: https://community.avid.com/forums/t/138146.aspx?PageIndex=1

The Quicktime_OPServer on my macbook was and still is "Not Responding". I am not sure is if this is connected, but maybe it's worth mentioning.

    Any updates?
