MC 2018.7 and AJA hardware hangs with beach ball

After installing MC 2018.7 the system launches with hardware disabled and seems to function properly. As soon as I click the timeline button to enable the AJA IO Express hardware, I get a spinning 'beach ball' that hangs the application. The Mac OS says the application is not responding. After waiting up to an hour MC is still beachballing.

Here is some system info, Mac Pro Early 2009 Dual Quad Core Xeon 28 GB RAM, Radeon HD 7950 GPU, Avid dongle license.

Here is a list of variables I've already tried to get this working. (with no luck so far)

    Mac OS 10.11.6 and AJA Desktop 13.0, 14.02, 14.2

Mac OS 10.12.6 (Clean install) AJA Desktop 14.2

Disabled GPU in both Rendering and DVE preview.

I also removed all of the third-party AMA and effect plugins.

An error message comes up in the source monitor a few seconds after clicking to enable the hardware:

VDM3BobVideoOut::PreSync(): Error in BOB device StartIO()

I have 2018.7 working on a Macbook Pro with Blackmagic hardware-no issues so far.

Is anyone using 2018.7 with AJA hardware successfully?

    Thanks for reading,
    Bruce

Having here an AJA LHi (AJA Desktop 14.2) attached to a Mac Pro 6-core running MacOS 10.13.5, and didn't notice any problem with MC 2018.7.

We have experienced this as well with a MacPro 6c running 10.12, Media Composer versions 2018 and up, and with AJA IO4k drivers everywhere from 12.4.2 to 14.2.  I would love to hear if they pointed you in a specific direction with the case.

    Folks,

I alerted Steve at AJA and they have seen a few cases on this - have not discovered the variable that might be causing it though.  I need each of you that have this to get a case going so we can track it and work with them on this.

Re: MC 2018.7 and AJA hardware hangs with beach ball

As Marianna has posted, this is now a known issue. Avid support is asking me to continue using the previous working of MC until they get back to me with more info. I'm guessing we may have to wait for the next software update, either from Avid or AJA. In the meantime, I'm going to try one more test with Mac OS 10.13 High Serria and see if the issue changes.

Also, I've discovered this problem occurs with both MC 2018.5 and 2018.7. I have no issue when using MC 2018.4

Good luck to everyone and as always a special thanks to Marianna.

Same for MC 2018.5 thru 2018.7.1 with AJA Kona LHi on a 2008 Mac Pro running 10.11.6.

    No problem on 2018.4.

Re: MC 2018.7 and AJA hardware hangs with beach ball

I have a Kona 3G on an older Mac Tower 3.1 with El Cap.  Just installed 2018.7.1.  My IO seems to be working fine.  Will see after awhile.

I will restate an ongoing issue with AJA drivers and my various Avid systems. Disabling and reenabling the hardware IO is hit or miss as to whether it will re-enable politely or beach ball for awhile.

EDIT:  I am running the most recent AJA drivers on this system.  14.0.2 I believe.

I got the same problem with MC 2018.5 thru 2018.8 with AJA IOExpress (14.2.1). tried on OSX 10.11.6, 10.13.5 and on 10.13.6.

2018.4 works on all 3 OS Versions most of the time but hangs sometimes for about 1 Minute.

Re: MC 2018.7 and AJA hardware hangs with beach ball

Im seeing allkinds of erratic behaviour when usign AJA IO4k on all version of MC 2018.x

Most notably when playing and stopping.

When pressign play we get what i would describe as a double frame before playback and when pressign stop jumps back one frame and then stops.

Other strange behaviour consists of constant beachball when doing anythign in MC and switiching between apps or the finder,  unless fast scrub is turned off in Timelien settings. The performance seems fine.

Also getting dropped frames at random durign playback of any timelines.

Ive tried all the AJA Drivers goign back as far as 13.xx and all versiosn of MC 2018.

Best config ive foudn is MC2018.7.1 withAJA 14.0.1

Seriously thinkin of makign a move to Blackmagic - no issues at all as far s i cant tell after a few days editing.

I was using a Aja T-Tap and I'm in contact with Aja support about the playback issues since 3,5 years - but no progress...

The last working driver combination was  Aja 10.5.2 driver & Aja OpenIO 10.4.9 with MC8.4 & OSX 10.9.5.

But it seems that only very few people complain about these issues.

I switched to Blackmagic UltraStudio MiniMonitor, but since Desktop driver 10.9.5 (that isn't working in newer MC versions anymore) I have other playback issues that support is investigating...

all different setups in various editing suites. my own: MC 2018.2, OSX 10.12.6, iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017), 4,2 GHz Intel Core i7, 40GB RAM, Radeon... [view my complete system specs]

I have this on MC 2018.8. Have anyone found a solution? What's the latest from AJA? Should we just replace it with BM hardware?

Re: MC 2018.7 and AJA hardware hangs with beach ball

    Totally agree with Marty

This has been a problem for many years as far as i can tell. It used to be that you coudl delete the openio_virtio from with the avxs2 pluggins folder from within the avid media composer app.

Now you cant do that with out disabling any attached hardware.

Ive found a combination of turning of fast scrub and not having caps lock on seems to ease performance. But on the whole the system is sticky and sluggish.

Either that or you disable the hardware altogether and only use it for when youreally need video playback.

FWIW the promblem seems far worse in 2018.x and on the sytems that we are now running BM hardware the sytems is flawless.

Re: MC 2018.7 and AJA hardware hangs with beach ball

Wow. THat's sad to hear. Not that surprised though after getting burned on the three DNxIV's i bought, really not fit for purpose. But on the other hand, they have other issues than what I see with the io4K. AJA have sent me a beta driver that I'll test next week. If it still fails I'll switch to BM hardware. Sad.
