    How do Floating licenses work?

Usually when we launch a client it checks out a floating license from the volume license server.

When we close MC on the client the license is returned to the pool, and no longer listed on fFexnet Device Manager.

This is not happenning with some clients, some of the time. the license stays checked out for 6 hours or so.

    Why is this?

I'd appreciate an answere from avid tech

    Nigel

The Media Composer client will grab a license when it launches. The license will be good for six hours. After three hours, it will try to grab a new one for the next six hours. So it depends on the timing of when the user quits out of Media Composer. If they quit out just before three hours after renewing it, it will hang on for next three hours. But if they quit out after the renewal, it will hang on for another six hours.

If the users go to AppMan and deactivate, it will release it immediately.

Bottom line.......Media Composer releases the license on quit automatically.  So it will not hang for another six hours.  If you crash that’s a different story.

Re: How do Floating licenses work?

    Thanks Marianna

That is not our experience with 45 mac clients, using Flexnet device manager to monitor what is happening.

The majority of our suites launch and activate automatically. They appear under the devices list on Flexnet Devices manager, and then disappear from there immediately MC is closed. The license is immediately freed up, as shown by the number of available licenses.

It only happens as you describe on occasion, and always with  suites that have problems - they request activation method frequently on boot-up. Sometime syou can click through and launch. Other times it takes several attempts to activate a floating license. This process means booting up MC can take 4 minutes, on a fast iMac with SSD boot drive. When it works properly it take less than 30 seconds.

Can you or avid techs advise further on this please?

    Thanks

Re: How do Floating licenses work?

I don't know if this is relevant, but our 2 x 20 floating license packs are provided to us by Avid as ALPs.

I'vee now tried a fresh install of everything on the iMAc client and am still getting unstable license behaviour, including stupid error messages like:

"This software was released past your contract expiration date (2598528/24576/24576). Please go to Avid Support Website."
