Convert an HD sequence to SD

I am trying to determine the best way to convert an HD (1080i) sequence to SD so I can create DVD's. Any help is appreciated.

I use Adobe Media Encoder. I do not like Avid's downconversions.

No need to downconvert, just feed Your favourite encoding/authoring software with an HD file.

Media Encoder does a terrible job downconverting interlaced footage.
I did a lot of testing lately using professional encoders like Media Encoder, Squeeze and Telestream as well as free ffmpeg based tools. Believe it or not... I achieved by far the best quality downscaling of interlaced footage with the consumer program TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 6. There's an option "Output interlace with high quality resize" and man does it look good. No line flickering and other problems I had with the other encoders.

For progessive footage on the other hand Media Encoder is a good choice, especially for downconverting UHD to HD.

Not to be overly contrarian.  I'm a big fan of TVM's high quality deinterlacing, but the final output here is supposed to be DVD, which is interlaced.  Adobe Media Encoder actually does a very creditable job going from 1080i to 480i.

Just to be clear, some tool will have to downconvert from HD to SD when making a DVD.  DVD is a SD delivey format.

No doubt about It, nevertheless some, if not many, authoring apps will take care of the downconversion, for the rest of them encoding is necessary.
