    Sluggish timeline performance (MC2018.2)

The timeline in Media Composer lags an awful lot. I had this problem on my laptop before, and expected things to be better on my newly build desktop. However, performance is still terrible.

Performing an extract operation takes about a second before anything happens. CTRL+Z takes maybe two seconds before the result is visible.

My system: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, Nvidia GeForce 1080 Ti, 64 GB RAM, Samsung Evo 960 SSD, Windows 10 Professional Fall Creators Update 64-bit, MC 2018.2.

I'm aware that these specs are not officially supported, but come one, this system should have no problems whatsoever with MC. Playback performance is fine by the way, no problems with that. It's only the actions in the timeline that are painfully slow.

I'm pretty certain it's got something to do with the CPU, because this is what the resource monitor from Windows shows me during slowdowns:

So that's a single core going straight to 100% load.

Any ideas on how to get rid of these slowdowns? They really break my flow.

I would never buy an AMD for editing. I tried once with bad results.

I rarely have lags even on 4K timelines (depending on the amount of FXs of course)

on my 7 old year custom made PC but with an Intel and a Quadro.

Having said that and while your system is totally out of specs,

it also depends on what you do on the timeline.

Hi George, thanks for your reply. The machine wasn't specifically build for MC (I do most of my work in Adobe Premiere), and with these specs I expected Avid to work perfectly fine, even for an unsupported system.

I'm working with 1080p DNxHD files, nothing out of the ordinary. Playback performance is good, no troubles there. Moving the playhead around in the timeline goes fast too. But simple things like extract, undo/redo or exiting trim mode will make the program freeze for up to 5 seconds. I have no such problems with Premiere or Lightworks.

Allocated Video Memory in Media Cache settings window is set to High (47 GB), with both Playback and FX Editing Video Frame Cache enabled. In Video Display Settings the GPU is selected, Stream limit 12.

    Walter Johan:

Allocated Video Memory in Media Cache settings window is set to High (47 GB), with both Playback and FX Editing Video Frame Cache enabled. In Video Display Settings the GPU is selected, Stream limit 12.

Set that to the half of your memory at the first tab.

Use a 20000 disk cache and 5000 to memory cache.

Set all cache files to an external SSD.

I did some more tests and the slowdowns were caused by having iZotope Neutron plugin on one of the audio tracks. After removing Neutron the excessive slowdowns are pretty much gone and MC now runs OK (but is still less responsive than some of its competitors). Glad to have figured that out! Back to using the build-in audio effects.

@George, thanks for the tip, I'll have a look at that!
