Design My Windows PC; $15,000 Budget

Please recommend a hardware configuration for Media Composer.  We'll be using it for half hour TV shows, half hour infomercials and two minute infomercials to be broadcast on TV.

I'm going to custom build this PC...I've built many PC's but I've never built one that was exclusively for editing with Media Composer.  I need speed speed and more speed especially when publishing/exporting/rendering and those tasks that often take a long time for the PC to complete.

How would you allocate $15,000 if you were trying to get the absolute fastest performance from a dedicated Microsoft Windows computer that will be used exclusively for editing.  I know some professionals spend far more than $15K but unfortuately, $15,000 is the absolute max budget.

    Kind thanks,

$15000 should get you a pretty kick-ass system!

Although you've said it'll be specifically for MC, many editors now rely on other 'helper' apps such as Resolve, After Effects, Sorenson etc, and these will really benefit from more cores and a high-end GPU.

There's a general consensus that the latest Intel Skylake-X (x299) or Threadripper CPUs are a better bet than Xeons, and there's lots of information on the Puget Systems website on PC builds and tests between various CPUs and GPUs on the sort of software you'd likely be using.

Just out is the new Gigabyte X299 Designare EX motherboard with on-board Thunderbolt 3, which will greatly expand your storage and external peripherals options. These new breed of motherboards also sport faster memory & overclocking options and slots for NVMe SSDs, which will really shift the data through at the very best speeds.

If I were doing this for a active show I would build 2 more reasonable machines with a shared storage . That way you would have a edit machine and a render machine "#NODOWNTIME"and it would give you a option if your mach went down

That's a serious budget and with it you can but a serious dual Xeon workstation. When it comes to dual Xeons we recommend an HP or Dell workstation vs build your own. There are heat & mechanical issues that go into dual Xeon systems that can severley impact your machines performancew if not done right.

Check out this killer HPz840 system for $10,999:
