In addition to the trim crashes, we're now also getting random crashes on exiting the Title Tool as its trying to save in 8.7.2. These are hard crashes, so no way to recover anoyingly.
Weirdly we were able to recover about 80% of the crashes in 8.8.4 and 8.8.5 using the quit OPServer thing, so that seems to be pretty random too.
We have the Trash Cans with the Blackmagic DNxIO boxes. Going to try some different Blackmagic drivers too.
We're getting a different Wacom brought over and will test a few driver versions with that. The VFX editor has a gaming type mouse which is doing some pretty weird things with MC also.
I've also wondered about cabling infrastructure. We're going through a few fibre switches to get to the Nexis. However why that would effect Trimming is beyond me.
Its very weird, we've tried so many things now but as you say, its seemingly impossible to reproduce on command, so nailing it down is all but impossible.
Dark days... We haven’t used title tool that much, and not at all in 8.7.2. He’s still stable on that version tho.
Some of my instincts were networking dropouts as well. But we’re on Ethernet to our Nexus and we were experiencing similar crashes. It’s just so random. Towards the end he was crashing on non-Trim mode things as well. Hitting play crashed it. The worst is I got in a lockup circle where it would crash upon launching. Full uninstall reinstall Avid and BC installers.
Rob should’ve passed along my number. Feel free to call, my advice would be to move to 8.8.1 since that seems like uncharted territory in this wilderness... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about sums it up!
I'm also starting to wonder whether this issue could be related to the endless Blackmagic / OpenIO driver issues which happened when 7.0.4 and 8.0 came out. It took months and months to address and this feels related enough that it could be be a hang over.

I'm going to try the temporary fix they posted back then (even though its supposed to be resolved), worth a try:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Troubleshooting/Hangs-entering-trim-mode-with-3rd-party-Open-IO-hardware
What Blackmagic driver version are you using?
10.9.1 Blackmagic driver.
I did try removing the virtual IO, he was still crashing on 8.8.4. I do think it’s Blackmagic related though.
Ah OK, thanks Nate. We were on 10.9.3 and reverted to 10.9.1, will see how it goes, but if you've had crashes on that version, doubt thats going to make much difference.
Haven't pulled the vitual IO thing yet, but won't bother if that didn't help you.
We figured out the title tool crashes - we were saving titles with special characters in the names which the system did not like. Turning on the 'Use Windows compatible file names and path limites' option in General settings fixed that. One down...
We had a similar issue using ISIS client software (4.7.11), the problem was solved by using the latest NEXIS client software (7.9). I hope this helps.
m@.
Ah this is great to know. Do you know if this could be the result of some fixes they list in Nexis 7.8?
- Fixed an issue that caused corruption during specific read/write patterns.
- Improved I/O flush times
We're on Nexis 7.6.1 and had planned to upgrade to 7.9 soon. Thanks very much for the tip.
Also - are you saying you just updated the client side software and kept the ISIS Server software the same?
Installed the v7.9 Nexis client and sadly its not made any difference for us. Still rendomly crashing in trim mode.
I was wondering if anyone found a fix to this, my editor is currently on version 8.9.4. and we have been having very similar issues, random crashes with the spinning wheel appearing and unable to continue
We are seeing the same issue on one of our current projects, 5+ Avids, only happening on one (Editors) system.
The machine can go for a few days without issue then can have 4-5 crashes within a few hours.
With regards to the crash, it actually freezes the software, with no error messages. It happens in Trim mode, and mainly appears to be when triming multicam, normally 2 clips.
Stopping the OPServer can allow the project to be saved, although not everytime.
We are using 2013 Mac Pros, 12 Core, 32Gig Ram, D700 with DNxIQ.
Software:
OS 10.10.5
MC 8.9.4
BM Drive 10.9.6
ISIS Server and Client 4.7.11
Project:
23.93p1080
DNx115
Storage:
ISIS5500
10gig connection to Dell N2024
Single cat 6 ethernet to each client
No error on storage.
We installed a new CPU with completely fresh install from OS up after the machine had crashes a few times in 2 hours, and it crashed within 30 minutes. Have run new ethernet.
Would be great to see if anyone else was experiencing anything similar so we can get more info over to Avid and get this solved ASAP.
Just to add, the crashing/freezing happens more often than not, we rarely get the few days without.
We have also stated a new project and new user, which we thought had sorted the issue, but after 2 days it started freezing again.
We're in the exact same boat as Nic and the others on this thread. Its been a long term problem thats been very, very thoroughly debugged at our ends. I can not think of a single thing more we can do to find alternative reasons for this, it must be an MC software issue.
Please Avid can we have some response to this and if you want us to run some logging software to help track down whats causing the lock up / crash, then no problem. We're all very willing to do whatever's beeded, but just need you to point us in right direction and investigate futher.
Many thanks and Happy New Year!
