Hello i have finisched a long job, 53 minutes video
and it is time to correction /grade and export
I have worked on low resolution transcoded files (some are still original ama linked though) and it is time to do the whole procedure of relink
I need help in doing, and with some hint to make a safe copy just in case...
Can someone please explain the procedure?
thanks a lot
take all current media offline
(i.e. rename mediafiles to __Avid Mediafiles)
create an empty bin, ama link all your source footage
everything on the timeline should come online again. imported pics, music etc won't, nevermind.
transcode your sequence to something beefy like DNxHD 185x, maybe to another hdd/partition.
link your timeline to that drive.
undo the rename of Avid Mediafiles
ok thank you
there is something i don t get though
i rename the avidmediafiles, and that s fine.
then i create an emt bin and ama link..don t understand the relation between this 2 step
also audio files will not be relinked?so what shall i do for it?
eventually..what d i need for the final rename of the folder avidmediadiles? could i throw it?
i am alsoo looking for a way to export evverything in one project to have it in good order
thanks
you rename avid mediafiles so your current data becomes offilne.
then, if you ama link everything, Avid has no other option but to use those clips.
everything you see on the timeline then is ama, no need to check if everything is linked properly, or if some clips still link to low quality transcodes.
then you transcode everything on the timeline to good quality, even though music etc is missing.
then you have a timeline in high quality, with some parts missing.
take Avid mediafiles online again, and the missing parts (music etc) will re-appear.
of course you can merge the high quality mediafiles created in this process with your old ones.
you can e.g. relink a timeline to a specific quality codec. I'm just trying to show you a way that's as simple as possibe where nothing that can go wrong.
ok but how avid will ama link automatically again?
it will ask me for path i bet, right? and i have the original clips from differnt folders
will everything go good?
once i trasncoded again, can i delete the renamned avidmediafiles folder, as i will not need anymore i suppose?
to link again:
make a new bin. I'd call it "del" caus u can throw it away after
avid won't ask for paths, thats the old Batch Import method. don't use that.
link everything via source browser. you can link a top folder with material from many days and cameras inside.
might take a while, have coffee. do stuff that's still missing manually.
yes you can throw out renamed mediafiles in the end.
since you're not that skilled yet, do it only in the very end.
make a heap of your current data then and consolidate timeline to another drive.
check that everything is online from the new location by taking old mediafiles folder offlline.
then again, i don't recommend ever throwing data away.
real backup follows the 3-2 rule: 3 backups on 2 types of media.
for avid folk a reasonable tactic is to backup Avid Mediafiles on 2 types of media and camera clips in a seperate backup. or the other way around.
LTO Tape is really cool. pays off if you push > 10-15TB/year
ok getting into
still is not clear to me how pratically will do the link, after i created hte bin
this bin will contain all the relinked clip?
how peactically are the step for relink?
thanks a lot again
try youtube: AMA link
but it's strange that you don't know. did you get the stuff online via import when you started the project?
i know hot to link...what i don t know iss this procedure
btw all the files i have used are already in my bins as first thing i link them all..then while i was using before putting them in the timeline i transcoded them within avid, and used the xxxx.new01 newly created files
now i am making a test with a small project i created for the pourposes
first ama link in one bin..then transcioded them and used in the timeline
after renaming the avidmediafolder i actually see all the clips missing in red
now as you suggest i create a new bin and go inside and select LINK TO MEDIA
in this way i have to select each files one by one though
and in any case at the end the clips are sill in red!
i think there is some misunderstanding because of avid version
i have 8.4.4 and there is no source browser
procedure could be slightly different?
it's just now named source browser yet. precedure is the same.
stuff should relink, don't know what is out of whack on your end.
take the timelinke in your test project -> relink
-> selected items in all open bins
relink by sorce file ID in first go on first attempt, file name on second.
i think i find the solution for my version from an old post
this is the workflow
Edit your transcoded clips into your timeline and finish up your edit.
To relink back to your original AMA clips, close the bin with your transcoded clips, open the bin with the AMA clips and select all those clips. Open the bin with your sequence and select your sequence as well (holding the control key as you select to sequence so that it is included in the whole selection).
At this point, the only files selected should be your original AMA clips and your sequence.
Right-click on the sequence and select 'Relink...'
In the Relink dialog, select the option that reads as 'Selected Items in ALL open bins' and then make sure the option to create a new sequence is ticked. The other default options should suffice.
Click OK and a new sequence should appear. It should look exactly like your original sequence but will have each clip replaced by its AMA counterpart.
Now you can do a video and audio mixdown at a much higher quality and put these in another sequence (the mixdown will let you then do a SAS or QT Ref export to an encoding package like Squeeze, Adobe Media Encoder or TMPGenc for transcoding to a delivery format).
It actually took much longer to write this description that it will take you to execute these steps.
i tried in the test sequence and work..i have to try in the big one
yhe only problem is that i have all the ama linked files in several differnt bins and i don t know how to select them all together
Lukas Boeck: it's just now named source browser yet. precedure is the same. stuff should relink, don't know what is out of whack on your end. take the timelinke in your test project -> relink -> selected items in all open bins relink by sorce file ID in first go on first attempt, file name on second.
ok more or less is what i have just posted and as i said seems work
thsi method isn't really different from mine.
i still suggest you take Mediafiles offline to be sure what yore seeing is pure ama.
also, then you can do it in several steps and don't have to select several bins together.
alterenatively cou can create a new "del" bin and alt-drag all ama clips into it sou you can easily select them together.
i agree is the same method..only thing that at first you missed some important part! :)
and that's why i could not go on
thanks a lot anyway for all your support, and yes for sure i ll keep your advice to put offline the mediaolders
also beacuse right now seems like i don t have enough room for the next final transcode! :)
byt the way about lto tape, seems nice things..i saw around prices form something like 100 euro to several hundred
i dont have really big need for now, you think a cheap tape would do the job?
