Last year (sometime in the fall) I upgraded to Media Composer 8 on my desktop computer (it worked). I use a dongle. I have not renewed my supscription when it expired at the end of December. It has been a while since I used Avid. Eariler today I powerd up my laptop for the first time in months. it's a macbook pro with bootcamp. I run windows 7 on the windows side and earlier today, I upgraded the mac side from El Capitan to Sierra. I'm running Media Composer 7 on both mac and windows side. I launched Media Composer on the windows side with my donlgle and everything worked as it should. I then tried to launch Media Composer 7 on the mac side and I keep getting the error:
"The Software License is no longer activated on this system. Please contact Customer Support for further assistance."
Then Media Composer closes. I have always been a dongle user. Any thoughts on what is causing this problem?
Thanks
I purchased a subscription renewal via VideoGuys. I havend had to upgrade/renew in a while. Avid's website gets more and more confusing. I tried to enter the code, only to be informed I need to enter in on a different page because it's a subscription renewal and not an upgrade. I have no Idea if the code was applied to may account or not. I wish Avid would make it easier instead it keeps refering me back to the account page and launching web tabs. It looks like I should stick with Creative Cloud.
It looks like it won't let me re-instate my subscritpion because I didn't purchase from Avid. Now I have to go through the trouble of getting a refund from VideoGuys. No wonder editors are fleeling Avid.

FWIW assuming you are trying to open the same version of MC 7.x on the Mac as on the Windows machine that works the Dongle should just work. If you are trying with the very latest vesion of MC7 (later than the Windows machine) the error message could be correct until you have a valid update installed. In this case installing the same MC version as on the working Windows machine should solve the issue.

Here is what happened. Your licene expired back in january of 2017. You get a 30 day grace period to renew. The renewal for a license within the 30 day window of expiration is $299 per year. that nets you suport, upgrades and such.
Since that didnt happen, the system license went into a reinstatement mode. The reinstatement is $399 for a license and then the following year it drops back to $299 per year. We have to charge the additional $100 for the time spent in expired mode. In your case that woud be January 30th thru June 12 2017.
I went ahead and cancelled the code you bught from Videoguys.com and as a gesture of goodwill deposited a $399 code for you in your My Avid. So you are all set and got the reinstatement for $100 less and i did this for you as you obviosuly made an error and the site was a tad confusing.
My apologies...... if in the future you are EVER confused aobut what to do or buy, just ping me... I am only an email away.
Your license is now good thru June 2018.
Make sure though you know the following:
Q: How do my upgrade and support plan dates get written to my license?A: Upgrade and support plan start and end dates are written to a Media Composer v8 license upon activation of the license (or creation of the Dongle Updater .avd file) in the case of Dongles. Q: How do I know what my upgrade and support dates are?A: The upgrade and support information for each of your Media Composer licenses can be found in your My Avid Account. Simply select My Products and Subscriptions, then expand the product category you are looking for, and locate the System ID of the license in question. The upgrade and support information will be visible to the right of your System ID.
Q: How do I update my license if I have a dongle?A: Customers who have a dongle license for Media Composer will need to update their dongle once per year, just like customers with a software license. Dongle updater files can be generated from within your My Avid Account in the My Products and Subscriptions section. Locate your dongle’s system ID, then select the “Download Dongle Updater File” button. This will prompt you to enter in your dongle’s serial number; once complete, a dongle updater file will be created and saved to your system. Use Application Manager to update your dongle with the updater file. Once updated, the upgrade and support entitlements will be written to the dongle and displayed by Application Manager in the Support tab. For complete information on updating a dongle, please visit the avid.com/dongle web page.Q: How often do I have to update my license?A: Your license needs to be updated no more than once per year (365 days) any time after your upgrade and support plan has been renewed. It is not necessary, however, to update your license if you are not performing a software update. If your upgrade and support plan is successfully renewed, but you are not going to upgrade your software version at that time, you do not need to upgrade your license. Licenses only need to be updated when you have renewed your upgrade and support plan and are performing a software upgrade to a version that was released after your previous upgrade and support plan expired.
Q: I have a Dongle - why did an Activation ID show up in My Avid Account?A: An Activation ID is required to create a Dongle Updater file. As most dongle users were never given an Activation ID upon purchase (as it was not previously required), Avid has automatically deposited an Activation ID in your My Avid Account so that you may successfully update your dongle with your upgrade and support entitlement information. You do not need to use this Activation ID anywhere else – it is only necessary when creating your Dongle Updater file.
I hope this helps you out!
