    New build for Avid MC

I have been having an issue with my current build where my computer just shuts off then reboots.  I always get that it is a power issue in the error log but I can not solve this.  This year I have changed out the memory, psu, motherboard and boot drive.    I am now getting the issue again after not having it for a few months.  Today when I turned on the pc to sit down and work it ran the check disk for the C drive.   The constant restarts has made me crazy and I have seen this error reported by a ton of people all over the net and not a single person has solved it.

anyway, I think I will just rebuild from scratch.  I am running mc 8.7 right now but will update to the current mc for the rebuild.  So I am wondering if anyone out there has a list of components recently that has worked for them.  I am using the specs from this site https://pixelstrobist.com/best-pc-for-video-editing-for-all-budgets/  as a baseline the super computing pc for 2300.  I do not want amd however.  I have a blu ray and quadro 4000 gpu currently I am hoping to reuse.

Is Avid safe to run in windows 10 pro yet?  Sorry for not knowing I just have been running windows 7 without a problem forever and had no interest in changing.  If avid is ok with windows 10 then I will upgrade.

I have a kona 3g with the BOB that I use also.  I just want to find a a nice blend of working parts.

    Look forward to any thoughts.

Yes, Win10 Pro works great! Been on it for over a year.

With Win10 make sure once you get it up and working to turn off the Win auto updates. They can kill your system.

I've found that MC barely uses the GPU, so using an expensive/powerful video card had little impact on performance. Also found the Quadro cards to be underper spec'd when compared to their GeForce counterparts.

Maybe this situation has changed with the latest versions of MC.

It's worth mentioning that by default, WIndows 10 is set up to send a lot of information about you and your computer back to Microsoft.

There's a video that goes into this in a lot of detail, if you can get past the presenters rather annoying presentation style!

He also runs through Spybot's Anti Beacon software, which is designed to disable all these data sharing 'options', which can even switch themselves back 'on' after an update!

Also think about future proffing some. Yes MC uses very little of GPU, yes most 3rd party plug-in's do. Also Premiere uses GPU a lot. So will you be or maybe using Premiere also?

Over the last 20 years I have learned to steer clear of 3rd party utilities and "helpers". Usually they start off somewhat beneficial, as time moves on they often cause more problems that they are supposed to "fix".

I can certainly see if more GPU power is needed for plugins and other apps. But for the expectation that MC might be using the GPU more is not a great idea, IMHO.

The reason being that unlike a mother board, a video card is rather easy to upgrade and the pace of GPU development seems to be way outpacing that for CPU's.

The highest I'd recommend is a very good card, like a 1080. But going any higher than that just seems like a waste of money, JMHO.

Re: New build for Avid MC

Let me begin by saying, clearly, that I love MC. I've been using MC since v3. It's always been a dependable platform for my editing.

Having said that, my last build was an Intel platform with Thunderbolt II and a dual GPU setup, one nVidia Quadro 4000 card, to satisfy my display needs, and one nVidia GTX1070 for GPU processing. This setup is fully supported by the paid version of Davinci Resolve 12.5. I completed my last job on Davinci Resolve, why?

I've been processing a lot of high end drone footage, i.e. 5K/29.97P cDNG. This really takes a lot of processing power. Especially, getting the first RAW pass to play back in real time. I can get realtime playback, using Thunderbolt II with RAIDed SSDs, and 100% GPU from the GTX1070 card. Resolve can do it, MC is brought to its knees.

Let me add that I'm not posting this to troll AVID. I've got an AVID wrokflow based on years of expereince. But, requirements have pushed me to faster turnaround. MC is a ponderous system, not really intended for independent users. My needs are going off in a different direction; and, AVID seems not to care about those needs.

    'nuff said.

edit: P.S. I think it's worth a shoutout to Marianne, who has provided years of really valuable support and customer service. BMD is nowhere nearly as responsive as Marianne or this forum. It's painful to recognize what I've posted, above.

Re: New build for Avid MC

Interesting. Avid has taken the path of collaboration, cloud usage, extensive media management, distributed systems. As we move toward 4K, and higher, considering the interest in virtual reality, is the performance balance being drawn away from the pure function of editing and color grading?
